Most commercially available recombinant proteins guarantee an endotoxin level less than 1 EU per microgram.  However, this amount of residual endotoxin contamination is enough to activate certain cells of the immune system.  A recent publication from the University of Salzburg in Austria demonstrates this directly by showing residual endotoxin levels as low as 0.2 EU can activate dendritic cells.
