Dear Dr. ,

Does LAL Bleeding Affect Horseshoe Crab Behavior?
The Limulus amebocye lysate (LAL) assay is the industry standard for endotoxin detection.  The test derives from the bloodstream of horseshoe crabs, who are bled and returned to the water.  It is estimated that 10-30% of the crabs do not survive the bleeding process.  A recent study from New Hampshire suggests that those who do survive are afflicted with behavioral and physiological effects.  These include changes in mobility, altered behavioral rhythms and possible reductions in immune function.  These observations may contribute to the known decline in Limulus populations.

Endotoxin Detection and Removal Products
EDB-EDP-ESP
BioDtech, Inc. offers many products to assist in both removal and detection of endotoxin.

EndoBind-R is an affinity chromatography media designed to remove endotoxin from aqueous solutions.  The ligan
d is highly specific for endotoxin resulting in high detoxification and low product loss.

EndoPrep is a sample preparation kit used in con
junction with LAL or rFC assays.  It removes the interfering effects of proteins that can mask endotoxin or inhibit enzymatic assays thus providing more accurate  endotoxin quantitation.

ESP is a sample treatment system to remove the inhibitory or enhancing effects of blood plasma components in endotoxin detection assays.  The test is specially formulated to test citrated plasma samples.
