Gender Differences in Human SepsisWe recently developed a biomonitor system using endotoxin neutralization as a marker for immune response. To test differences between males and females we added a known amount of crude, exogenous endotoxin to plasma samples from healthy adult patients and measured the amount of endotoxin neutralized by plasma after a short incubation.
The results indicate that females have a higher endotoxin neutralization capacity than males. This difference is statistically significant with little overlap between the two populations. In addition to detecting known differences between sexes, endotoxin neutralization is effective in identifying patients with inflammatory bowel disease as well as monitoring disease severity:
