Scientists at BioDtech and Amgen recently published a method for using endotoxin neutralization as a biomonitor for inflammatory bowel disease. The results show that endotoxin neutralization mirrors known clinical differences between males and females and between control and disease patients. Additionally, this method showed great promise in measuring disease severity and/or the effect of medication. This novel new method can easily be adapted to any disease involving inflammation due to Gram-negative bacterial exposure.
Endotoxin Neutralization as a Biomonitor for Inflammatory Bowel DiseasePotential Uses of Endotoxin Neutralization:
- Indication of chronic, low-level endotoxin exposure
- Monitor therapeutic compounds
- Relationship between bacterial exposure and inflammation-associated diseases
- Status of the immune system
Advantages of Endotoxin Neutralization:
- Functional assay
- Simple experimental procedure
- Uses recombinant enzyme instead of LAL - more specific, cheaper, less variability
