Recently the FDA approved the endotoxin activity assay (EAA) for detection of endotoxin in the blood. This assay measures the respiratory burst of neutrophils upon interaction of endotoxin complexed with anti-endotoxin IgM in fresh whole blood. Several reports, including the one below from the Iwate Medical University in Japan, have shown that while the EAA has a high predictive value of mortality in septic patients, it is more indicative of general infection or inflammation and not specific for endotoxin.
Interleukin-8 induces an elevation in the endotoxin activity assay (EAA) level: does the EAA truly measure the endotoxin level?Scientists at BioDtech, Inc. have measured previously undetectable levels of endotoxin which could cause activation of the immune system. BioDtech products are designed to more accurately detect endotoxin and remove it from proteins and DNA.
