Accurate endotoxin detection in protein solutions is often difficult because the inherent properties of the protein affect endotoxin activity and/or the detection assay.  There are many examples of both interference and enhancement.  A recent publication from scientists at Pfizer highlight the variation in endotoxin detection and come to the conclusion that "a more thorough pre-treatment or testing modality may be required" for accurate endotoxin quantitation.
