SOMETHING NEW

We're trying something new at the College of Education. For many years, we've sent out the popular Education
E-News. Beginning this month, we're introducing a new look and a personal message from me. We'll try it for a few months to see how it works out.

As I send this, I am at SRI International, a research and development company for business and government in Menlo Park, California. I'm chairing a national advisory board for a large study of teacher professional development for inquiry science curriculum. Here's more about SRI

Next week, I head to Orlando, Florida, for the 65th annual meeting of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, where I'll serve as a panelist on the major forum, The Politics of Reforming Educator Preparation. I'll also serve on a panel that will discuss The Role of Leaders in 21st Century Education. You can learn more about AACTE here

Drop us a line and let us know how you like the new Message from the Dean

Looking for a job in 2013?

U.S. News & World Report says consider school psychology -- and it just so happens the College of Education has one of the longest running accredited programs in the nation.

Here's the local angle.

Award for Professor Jeffrey Milem

Professor Milem is the recipient of the American College Personnel Association's Contribution to Higher Education Award. He will receive the award at the ACPA Convention in Las Vegas next month, where he will be honored for his contributions to higher education.

Honor for Disability & Psychoeducational Studies Student

Undergraduate Ashley Woods was inducted in the Elgie M. Batteau Honor Society. She is part of the inaugural class of scholars to be recognized for outstanding achievements in scholarship, leadership, and service as African American students at the university. The award is given in the memory of Elgie Mike Batteau, considered the first African American graduate from the university. The society is the first honors organization established for African Americans on campus.

Winter Conference

Last month, more than 350 early childhood educators were at the UA for the 2013 North American Reggio Emilia Alliance Winter Conference. Linguistics Professor Ofelia Zepeda opened the conference. Part of the conference included social justice and multiculturalism panels, which provided an exchange of theories, ideas, and projects among scholars and educators working in the classroom.

Alumni News

Education and basketball star Ernie McCray is featured in two Arizona Athletics videos, recorded the last time he was visiting his hometown of Tucson. He talks about his connections to the UA and the basketball program. Holder of the all-time single game scoring record at 46 points, McCray also talks about his career as an educator and how basketball helps him even now.
