An Abundance of Toys
College of Education faculty and staff welcomed Second Lieutenant David Hunter from the Marine Corps during a holiday gathering this month. Lt. Hunter, who also happens to be a music educator who graduated from the UA, was on hand to collect an abundance of toys faculty and staff brought to the event.
Just in case you don't know,
Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for the holiday season. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major William L. Hendricks.
Taking Over
A team of faculty members from the college is taking over the editorship of the Journal of Literacy Research: Professor Patty Anders, Professor David Yaden, and Associate Professor Chris Iddings. The well-established JLR is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal that publishes research related to literacy, language, and literacy and language education from preschool through adulthood. JLR publishes research and scholarly papers, including original research, critical reviews of research, conceptual analyses, and theoretical essays. Articles represent diverse research paradigms and theoretical orientations, and they employ a variety of methodologies and modes of inquiry. JLR serves as a forum for sharing divergent areas of research and pedagogy and encourages papers that open dialogue among professionals from a variety of disciplines.
Gearing Up for Year Two

Our Stellar Graduates in the Field
The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the largest professional organization in the world promoting excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning for all, selected Teach Arizona graduate and Mountain View High School teacher Tarah Dahl from hundreds of applications nationwide to participate as a Dow-NSTA Fellow in the 2012 NSTA New Science Teacher Academy. The only teacher selected from Arizona, Dahl will participate with 243 other science teachers from across the country in a year-long professional development program designed to help promote quality science teaching, enhance teacher confidence and classroom excellence, and improve teacher content knowledge.
"We are thrilled to provide these teachers with the resources and support needed to help them feel confident and passionate about the critical work they do in inspiring today's youth to become tomorrow's leading STEM professionals," said Gerry Wheeler, interim executive director, NSTA.
Launched during the spring of 2007, the NSTA New Science Teacher Academy was established to help reduce the high attrition rate in the science teaching profession by providing professional development and mentoring support to early career science teachers. Since its inception, the academy has provided quality professional development to more than 800 science teachers nationwide.

Two other College of Education graduates received good news recently: KaiAnn Stamp, who graduated in 2008 in elementary education, and Matthew Van Derlaske, 2004, elementary education, were selected as Rodel Foundation Exemplary Teachers. These teachers, representing the best in the state, will each be asked to mentor six high-potential student teachers. Read more about Stamp

All the best to you and your family and friends for a wonderful holiday,
