Happy New Year Everyone! I hope you can join me tomorrow in welcoming the new year. I will be presenting a quartet of Chilean musicians performing boleros, tangos, and jazz standards, at the Revolution Art Cafe. Showtime: 4 PM to 7:30 PM. The singer, Alejandro Venegas, is NOW on his way to San Francisco. Antonio Novoa (trumpet) and Sebastián Monreal (guitar) have roamed the City long enough to connect with the local scene. They've jammed with some of San Francisco's top jazz musicians at venues like Club Deluxe and Madrone's. Ricardo Díaz (bass) has made the Bay Area his home for now. Following are photos of the guys sitting in at Smith Dobson's Tuesday jam at Club Deluxe. I'd like to thank André Larzul, owner of the Revolution Art Cafe, for making available space at the venue for this production. And to Gerald and the Sunday Jazz regulars--thank you for being so gracious and letting me present during your regular time slot. I'd like to extend thanks to Pedro Ordenes for sponsoring this newsletter. Coach Pedro, a Bay Area Chilean, founded Water World Swim. He coaches open water swimmers, produces annual races around Alcatraz Island and swim expeditions around the world. Six years ago, to celebrate the new millennium he swam across the Straight of Magellan in water temperatures averaging 39F and without a wet suit. The English Channel has been the globally-known standard for open water swimmers--now Coach Pedro is shifting the Mount Everest of swimming to the Straight of Magellan at the southern tip of Chile.
Also, a shout out to Jan Van Buyten for letting me use his animation, Pegasus. Jan is a fabulous local storyboard artist/animator from Belgium... but you'll often catch him sitting behind the drums... at Sunday jams at the Revolution.
Finally, please remember that Chile Lindo will be closed from now until Monday, January 18th.
Bonne Année et Bonne Santé,
Paula Tejeda Chile Lindo

Concepción
(Conce, as it's locally known)
Concepción is a vibrant university city and it's Chile's second largest city.
Its location is in the so called Zona Centro Sur (Central South Zone), in the geographic center of the country. It's the capital of the Concepción Province and/or 8th Region--also known as the Bío Bío Region. The region is named after the Bío Bío river which is Chile's widest river and its second longest one. Lonely Planet claims "Concepción is an important and hard-working port city that is best known for its universities and music scene (many of Chile's best rock acts got their start here)." On a personal note, I find that folks from Concepción are very professional and amiable. The fact that it is a university town seems to combine the best of both worlds--urban high standards with the warmth and friendliness that is characteristic to the provinces. I am pleased to introduce you to four devoted, versatile, and very talented Chilean musicians and I hope you will join us for their Revolution Cafe debut.

Alejandro Venegas - La Voz
Alejandro Venegas' nickname is "La Voz" (alluding to Sinatra's aka The Voice) for the unmistakable timbre of his voice. In fact, in Chile, he has a band called Frank, taking on the big band sound and the good old standards made famous by his idol. Ever heard Sinatra standards in Spanish? You'd be surprised at how many of the old Hollywood tunes were originally in Spanish and translated into English. For example the classic "Amapola (Pretty Little Poppy)".
Alejandro Venegas has a broad range of singing styles and swings to various genres--jazz, blues, rockabilly, boleros, rumba and tango.
His rock band, Julius Popper, has broken onto the radio airwaves in Chile, and are scheduled to perform at Santiago's Lollapalooza 2016.

Antonio Novoa - Trumpet
Antonio Novoa is Chile's latest up-and-coming jazz trumpet player. At twenty-two years old, he leads his generation and has shared the stage with well established musicians in Chile, including preeminent trumpeter Cristián Cuturrufo. At the Providencia Jazz Festival in Santiago, he was named "best jazz soloist" for 2013.
Novoa's musical aptitude was evident by the time he was four years old. When he turned seven, his father Kiko Novoa, a renowned sax player in Concepción, introduced him to the trumpet. From then on, his father insisted on rigorous training and he practiced under his father's stern instruction. Today Antonio is grateful for the early discipline that allows him interpretative freedom on his instrument.
Although jazz is his mainstay, Novoa also navigates through various genres, including cumbia and salsa. He is part of the Julius Popper band.

Sebastián Monreal - Guitar
Sebastián Monreal is also a member of Julius Popper. He is a regular in the Chilean jazz scene, performing with his quartet . He performs as a professional sideman with various groups covering a wide range of musical genres.
At 19 years old he directed the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" presented at Universidad de Concepción and aired over the university's cable television station. Sebastián is presently living in Berkeley, broadening his musical horizons. Upon arrival in the Bay Area, he immediately threw himself into the local music scene. He joined various local bands, including Pasto Seco, a popular Chilean cumbia big band founded by UC Berkeley student Tito Guerra. However, his heart is with San Francisco's jazz scene and he's already sitting in with the city's heavy weights at Club Deluxe, San Francisco jazz venue par excellence.

Ricardo Díaz - Bass
Joining the trio at the Revolution Art Bar is Ricardo Díaz, a Chilean jazz musician that has made the Bay Area his home base. By now Ricardo is no stranger to the jam sessions scene in San Francisco. You may have heard Ricardo's playing at previous Chile Lindo productions.
