La Peña Cultural Center celebrates its 40th Anniversary

La Peña Cultural Center was founded by Chileans, and a group of Bay Area activists, in 1975, in solidarity with the Chilean community facing exile due to the 1973 coup d'état.

Commonly known as La Peña de Berkeley, this community center has been the springboard for numerous local and international artists. The career of five-time Grammy-nominee local artist, percussionist John Santos, gained momentum from La Peña's stage. Mexican singer-songwriter Lila Downs' first Bay Area concert was performed at La Peña.

Hundreds of established artists and intellectuals have presented at La Peña, including South America's leading writer, Uruguayan journalist, Eduardo Galeano; and Chile's legendary poet, composer, musician, Patricio Manns.

Today, La Peña Cultural Center is a leading multicultural performing arts center, serving a very diverse community, and showcasing a wide range of artistic expressions.
