Dear friends of Chile Lindo:
Laurence Maxwell (Chilean) was detained in Mexico the night of November 20th at a protest demonstrating support for the disappearance of the 43 normalistas (students training to be teachers) on September 26, in Ayotzinapa.
The charges placed on Laurence are preposterous. He is a musician, writer, and PhD student at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). As his mother claims at a press conference in Chile, Laurence has ideals and he's committed to his ideals, however, he always worked through legitimate student organizations in Chile and he certainly is not a "terrorist."
Laurence was in California last October for his brother Dennis' wedding. Some of you may remember Dennis Maxwell, from the early Chile Lindo days, for he and I started Chile Lindo in 1995. I cannot tell you how unnerving this situation is to me personally, not to mention his family.
Today, family members living in San Francisco will hold a press conference at the Mexican Consulate. The family will request that the Mexican government ensure a legal, transparent, and just process that will end in the freedom of Laurence Maxwell as well as all those detained during this public demonstration in Mexico on November 20th.
