Dear Friends:
It's always interesting to see how people come and go in your life, how later they connect with each other through no fault of your own, and then somehow under completely different circumstances they're all back in your life somehow.
I first met the Chilean director Nando Grancelli, in May 2011, when he traveled from LA to premiere his documentary "Más allá del volcán," in San Francisco. The film was about the work of Salvadorean poet Manlio Argueta, the writer of the award winning novel "Un día en la vida". Manlio Argueta and I go way back. We first met in the 80's Mission District scene, and then, we met up again, years later in New York City, at the renowned Nuyorican Poets Café.
The film score for "Más allá del volcán" was composed by Axel Herrera, also a good friend from Chile, living in the Bay Area for many years. The premiere was hosted by yet another longtime friend and Mission District personality, the Salvadorean poet and writer of bi-lingual children's books, Jorge Argueta.
Needless to say this was one film premiere I couldn't miss... so I wrapped things up at Chile Lindo, hid behind my trademark sunglasses, and mustered the energy to make it to the premiere.
After the film showing, we all ended up at the Mission District's café par excellence, Café La Boheme on 24th & Mission (the first bohemian Mission District café). Truly a memorable evening!
Nando Grancelli and Axel Herrera have continued to work on various film projects, and now their latest collaboration, "Autism: Rethinking Family," will air on ABC 7, on Sunday, August 18th at 2PM.
