Greetings!

English

The multi-dam mega-project, HidroAysn, presently in the works to be built in Chile's Patagonia, is a matter of concern for citizens-worldwide. It's simple: our planet cannot afford the ruthless thrust of man's intervention anymore.

Those that "compartmentalize" can make an "intelligent" argument for just about any blueprint, however, nature is holistic, and does not answer to brilliant executives that wrestle with Mother Nature, at the expense of all living things, only to be, subsequently, humbled by her furious force.

The foundation of the argument that justifies this project--the rapid economic "development" of Chile--is an obsolete one, for in the twenty-first century we must recycle our resources, and not industrialize further at the expense of producing more pollution, creating a carbon footprint, and generating further contamination, bringing on further environmental devastation by means of corporate farming, transgenic crops, hydroelectric dams, nuclear plants, and the long list of factors that are contributing to the our environmental destruction, and subsequently the demise of species.

The premise that justifies the dams is a legitimate one: Chile needs new sources of energy to continue its present economic growth. However, the wisdom of developing Chile at the rate it is growing is questionable. It is simply not sustainable, and at this rate it will wring Chile dry of its resources in the short run, leaving the country stripped of its beauty and resources for future generations. Does Chile really need corporate farming and transgenic crops? There was a time, not long ago, that all of Chile's poultry was free-range. Today, you can't buy a single free-range chicken, not even in the heart of farmlands. And yes, the metabolism of preschool children is rapidly changing, and obesity is becoming a concern. Does Chile really need more shopping malls-that sell American brands made in China? Meanwhile Chile's national production, in most cases far superior to what is imported, is rapidly fading and going out of business.

The South has the extraordinary opportunity to NOT repeat the mistakes of the North-if it recognizes, once and for all, the fragility of our environmental global reality.

Finally, in actuality, it's a very simple matter. Not an easy one, but definitely a simple one: TIMES ARE CHANGING! And, we have to change with the times-like it or not!

Mother Nature proves, over and over again, that humans are meaningless before her yearning to protect her delicate balance! Ultimately, we will carryout the destruction of our civilization, as so many civilizations before us succeeded in doing so.... BUT, this time, it's our very self-extinction that is at play...

Sincerely,

Paula Tejeda

Queridos Amigos:

Saludos cordiales,
