Making LOCAL Happen: Annual Meeting is October 24
By Kathleen Burke, Co-op Board of Directors President
By now, all Member-Owners have received the 2015 Annual Report and Annual Meeting Invitation by mail. The report contains the ballot to vote for new board members and to accept or reject the proposed changes to our current By-laws. Please vote and mail or drop off your ballot at the store. Your participation is critical to the success of our cooperative! This year's Annual Meeting at the Keene Public Library's Heberton Hall on Saturday, October 24th, from 5 - 8 p.m coincides with Food Day, a national event to inspire Americans to eat a healthier diet and support more sustainable food systems. What better way to celebrate Food Day than by attending the Annual Meeting titled: Making LOCAL Happen! Come and eat a delicious healthy dinner, enjoy some locally made desert and sample some great local beer -- all for free, while you learn how the Co-op is supporting our local farm community. Amanda Littleton, the Cheshire County Conservation District Manager, will highlight the recent triumphs of agriculture and food production in our region, as well as the challenges we still need to work on. Would you like to volunteer at the meeting? We need help with set up, clean up and serving of the food. Interested? Email at board@monadnockfood.coop. Parking is limited at the library, so please consider car pooling with your friends and neighbors. We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting on October 24th - please register today! The first 150 Member-Owners to pre-register will receive a Co-op Stronger Together t-shirt, so don't wait!

Chocolate
By Mary Veerkamp, Co-op Outreach and Education Coordinator
For years I didn't really think about my chocolate purchases, since I'd already switched to primarily dark chocolate found at co-ops or other generally health-oriented venues. I'd pick up whichever bar sounded good at the moment (hello, Equal Exchange Organic Mint Dark Chocolate!) and be on my merry way. In more recent years, I've become even more discerning with my chocolate purchases, seeking out products that are Fair Trade certified. At first, I wasn't really certain what that meant, but I was sure it must be a good thing. I mean, ensuring that farmers and workers are treated well, fairly compensated, and engaged with an organization committed to poverty alleviation is something I want to support.

CONNECT2015: The Keene Comprehensive Master Plan
"A sustainable community is one that is economically, environmentally and socially healthy and resilient. It meets challenges through integrated solutions rather than through fragmented approaches that meet one of those goals at the expense of others. And it takes a long-term perspective - one that's focused on both the present and future, well beyond the next budget or election cycle." - The Institute for Sustainable Communities
The City of Keene's Comprehensive Master Plan reflects this call for a long-term perspective -- and sets its sight on a vision for Keene in the year 2028. This plan, based on a shared community vision, is now in its fifth year. It's time to collectively assess our progress around implementing this roadmap to a more sustainable community. One opportunity to come together and reflect on our progress is at the Hannah Grimes Center for Entrepreneurship's CONNECT2015 event on Wednesday, October 28 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Alyson's Orchard in Walpole. The event includes an interactive session with six visionary community leaders speaking about the importance of the Comprehensive Master Plan while focusing on six focus areas:
- A Quality Built Environment: Tedd Benson, Bensonwood Homes;
- A Unique Natural Environment: Ryan Owens, Monadnock Conservancy;
- A Vibrant Economy: Taylor Caswell, NH Community Development Finance Authority;
- A Strong Citizenship and Proactive Leadership: Jim Rousmaniere, author and former newspaper editor;
- A Creative, Learning Culture: Jeff Miller, board chair of Impact Monadnock and formerly President of Markem-Imaje;
- A Healthy Community: Linda Rubin, Healthy Monadnock.
In addition to coming together and acknowledging our progress, we can also look outside our region for inspiration. How are others manifesting their vision for a sustainable community?

October is Fair Trade & Co-op Month
Fostering Fair Trade and Cooperative Values

The benefits that farmers gain from fair trade-the ability to make decisions about their farming practices, access to markets and affordable credit, and fair prices to support their families and communities-embody the idea of empowerment and form the foundation of Equal Exchange's mission which reads in part "...to foster mutually beneficial relationships between farmers and consumers and to demonstrate, through our success, the contribution of worker cooperatives and Fair Trade to a more equitable, democratic and sustainable world."
