Thank You to Our Local Farmers & Producers
While I appreciate the continuous flow of more and more local produce and other local items into the store, synonymous with this time of year, I am also reminded of the challenges our farmers face in growing our food. Every year brings different challenges, some years it's the weather, others it's an abundant pest and most years it's probably some of both. I understand this more when I return home at the end of my work day and enter my own garden. For example, this year's potato beetles are ravaging my potato plants in a way I have never seen before. Squashing bugs in the garden last evening, it's clear to me that even a tuber that grows underground can be far more difficult to grow successfully than most of us realize -- including me, this year. All that to say, please join me this summer in thanking our local farmers and producers for the incredible work they do to bring us all the great food we find on our dinner table this time of year. We also want to thank all of you who joined us for this year's Ice Cream Social Fundraiser in mid-June. A big thank you to the Walpole Creamery and our local vendors who donated ice cream and sundae toppings. We raised over $500 for Southwestern Community Services Headstart Early Sprouts Program -- an incredible program that connects young children and their families to gardening, cooking and locally grown food. Finally, we hope to see you at one or more of our events this summer, from our Farm Tours to our Local Food BBQs.
Yours cooperatively,
Michael Faber

Savor Our Seasons: Eat Local!
By Mary Veerkamp, Marketing Department
As much as possible, I shift my purchasing to support local farms during the growing season. Not only does this practice make sense from an ecological standpoint, by cutting down on food spoilage related to transportation and greenhouse gas emissions, but it also truly strengthens our local food economy. And, a vibrant, healthy local food system helps to ensure stability and sustainability of food production in our region -- which is a good thing.

Throughout July, find Waldo in Keene. Use a "Find Waldo Local in KEENE!" passport to help you find Waldo in 25 local businesses and log your successes. Pick up your passport at the Co-op, The Toadstool Bookshop in Keene or any participating businesses.
A player may start at any business listed on the passport; the list travels with the player. Waldo is hiding -- somewhere -- in all the listed businesses. He's six inches tall, and he might be in any public part of the establishment.
The first 125 players who collect store stamps/signatures from at least 10 different businesses and turn them in at the bookstore win an "I Found Waldo" button and a "$1 Off" coupon. Players who collect at least 20 of the 25 possible stamps/signatures win an "I Found Waldo" button and a "$1 Off" coupon PLUS they are entered in a drawing for other larger prizes.
Plan to attend the Waldo Grand Celebration and prize drawing at 2pm on August 2 at the Toadstool Bookshop in Keene.
