Updates
The fact that we are about to celebrate our One Year Anniversary is proof that time really does fly! Our success and accomplishments are thanks to you -- your use of our cooperative is having a huge impact on our community.
We are making good progress towards meeting our financial goals. With all of your help, we may be able to hit our break-even point next year. (Our original projections showed us reaching our break-even point three years from opening.)
Almost one year later, we are sourcing products from 177 different farmers and product producers. That is well above the national Co-op average of 157, and we are just getting started. Look for more local produce and products coming this spring and summer. Also all the smiling faces you in see in the store are the result of 60 new jobs created and close to $1.2 million in wages being paid out during our first year.
Behind the scenes, we're working hard to reduce our environmental impacts. We donate food to the community kitchen and any food scraps left in the kitchen and produce departments are given to local farmers for animal feed and compost, ensuring these valuable nutrients are recycled instead of locked up in a landfill.
With the largest bulk department in Keene, we are providing options with significantly less packaging. Our new box initiative has already reduced our store's disposable bag use by 1/3. Thanks again to you all for choosing boxes! We also established relationships with businesses that recycle our packing materials, meat & seafood waste and vegetable oil from our kitchen.
Your participation -- whether simply shopping, becoming an owner, providing suggestions and feedback or offering a loan -- is critical to our success. So it's fitting that for our anniversary we once again solicit your participation in our customer/member survey, this is the perfect time to once again hear from you. Finally, please join us on April 5th to celebrate what our community's accomplishments at our One-Year Anniversary Celebration.
Yours Cooperatively,
Michael Faber

Connecting with Member-Owners
By Jamie White, Board of Directors
One of the priorities for the Monadnock Food Co-op Board of Directors is to be available to the Co-op's Member-Owners. The Board has a sub-committee called Member Linkage to help meet this goal. There are three Board Members on the Member Linkage Committee: Kathleen Burke (Chair), Sarah Harpster and myself, Jamie White.
The Member Linkage Committee creates opportunities for the Board and the Co-op's Member-Owners to communicate. One way we do this is to write an article for the newsletter each month. The Member Linkage Committee also plans the Annual Meeting. In the coming year the Committee will be developing additional occasions for the Co-op's Board and Members to interact.
As the Member Linkage Committee continues to plan the year's activities, we would like to hear from you. We are interested in answering your questions about the Board of Directors, how the Board of Directors operates, hearing your ideas for the Annual Meeting and other ways the Board may connect with the Co-op's Members. You can contact the Board of Directors at board@monadnockfood.coop. If you have questions or comments regarding the store, please feel free to fill out a comment card in the store or call 603-355-8008.
We look forward to seeing you at the Co-op!

The Co-op that Changed the South
By David J. Thompson; From Cooperative Grocer
It was a small cooperative store on a little-known island off the coast of South Carolina. During the harshest days of the civil rights struggle, embattled black leaders came through its doors seeking inspiration. Among the legendary leaders who visited the co-op were Ralph Abernathy, Dorothy Cotton, Conrad Brown, Fannie Lou Hamer, Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, Bernice Reagon, Cleveland Sellers, Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichael), Andrew Young, Hosea Williams, and many others.

Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Egg-free,
OH MY!
Resources for a (Mostly) Normal Life
By Mary Veerkamp, Monadnock Food Co-op
Almost 4 years ago, after several lab tests came back normal, I submitted to a food allergy test. I wanted to know why, at my relatively young age of 42, I had a constellation of irritating symptoms that made me feel old. I was exhausted in the middle of the afternoon, my joints (particularly in my hands) ached every morning and the dark circles under my eyes had taken on a life of their own. I was unwilling to accept that these symptoms were simply inevitable and natural side effects of the aging process.
