Updates
While the GMO labeling bill HB660 was defeated by a narrow margin in January, a new bill was recently introduced into the NH Senate called SB411. This bill is very similar to HB660 but with some further improvements that we think will make it more attractive to pass. SB411 closely matches legislation overwhelmingly passed in 2013 in Connecticut and Maine -- and legislation currently before the Vermont Senate. This legislation mirrors the world standard for GMO labeling. SB411 was assigned to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee with a hearing scheduled for Wednesday, February 12 at 9:45 a.m. I plan to attend this hearing and provide testimony in support of this labeling bill on behalf of the Monadnock Co-op and all of you -- our Member-Owners. We will track progress of this bill and keep you posted on ways you can help make this bill a success.
Separately, we continue to look for ways to improve our services and reduce our environmental impacts. We are pleased to announce the launch of a new box initiative where we will reuse the boxes we receive products in daily and offer them to shoppers for transporting groceries home, in place of our using disposable paper bags. If you already bring in your own cloth bags, that is great -- please don't stop! This provides another option to customers who don't have a bag. Our goal is to reduce our bag use by one-third. Currently, we use roughly 1,800 large paper grocery bags a week. If we are able to reduce that to 1,200 a week we will eliminate the use of 600 disposable bags and save our Co-op $260 a month -- and $3,160 annually. Here's another benefit: Most of us have either experienced or witnessed someone's paper bag failing. It's painful to watch, and our boxes will provide a much sturdier option for those purchases. In order to make this program a success, we need your help. Next time you are at the cash register opt for a box instead of a bag -- and please be sure to recycle the box when you are done. Thank you for your continued support and participation. Yours Cooperatively, Michael Faber Monadnock Food Co-op General Manager

A Co-op Needs Its Community
By Sarah Harpster, Board of Directors
In the first few months of serving on the Board of Directors for the Co-op, it has really been sinking in for me that being involved in a Co-op means much more than sharing the ownership of a grocery store with a bunch of my neighbors. Modern Co-ops come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from grocery stores to farms, to worker-owned factories, and they have been popping up all over the world for 170 years. What makes the movement special is that Co-op values put people, and the good of the community over the long term, at the very core of the way they do business.

Ned's Got the BEET!
Congratulations to Ned Braley - our very first employee to receive the Monadnock Food Co-op's "Beet Award."
Ned was nominated by those of you who filled out a Helping Hands form. Without hesitation, Ned jumps in to help in every department. He's a model employee always willing to go the extra mile. We commend Ned for being such a great employee!
The "Beet Award" is a quarterly award given to a staff member who most embodies the spirit of a great co-operator. They display a friendly attitude, help others out without hesitation and are incredible ambassadors of our Co-op.

Clean Food & Healthy Living Apps
By Mary Veerkamp, Monadnock Food Co-op
For a long time I resisted the technology of Smart Phones. I wanted my phone to be, well, a phone. Alas, the old phone died (it had a good, long life though) and I semi-reluctantly took my $5 trade-in and applied to an iPhone. I entered the water slowly, installing very few apps on the phone. When I asked for recommendations from friends, I was inundated with suggestions. Overwhelmed, I decided to search for apps that I thought would be really relevant to my lifestyle, rather than indulgent distractors. ( Bejeweled, anyone?) I have found that now, 2 years later, there are some apps that I rely on regularly when shopping for food and health products. I thought you, savvy consumer, might also want to know about these.

You Are What Your Food Eats
If you're a carnivore or omnivore, the sign above from Popper's at the Mill has a wise message for you: You are what your food eats. You might think a lot about what you eat, but are you thinking about what the animals you eat are eating too?
