Updates
Now that we're open, we're really excited to participate and support community events like Plaid Friday and the national Shift Your Shopping Campaign. We invite you to learn more below and celebrate our local economy with us. This week is Hunger Awareness Week. We've participated in Canstruction and co-sponsored last Sunday's A Place at the Table event which drew 250 people. Attendees donated close to 600 pounds of food to the Keene Community Kitchen - thank you to Monadnock Farm & Community Coalition for making this event happen. We just found out that Justin Somma our Grocery Manager and Canstruction sculptor won an award for his creation. He'll receive the award at the Hunger Banquet Friday night at Keene State College. All are welcome to attend! Next week is Thanksgiving! The store is fully stocked with everything you need to make a wonderful Thanksgiving meal. Also, we're still offering pre-order turkeys and pies -- call us at 603-355-8008 for more details or stop by the store today. We are so very grateful to you. Happy Thanksgiving! Yours Cooperatively, Michael Faber Monadnock Food Co-op General Manager
P.S.: Just wanted to point out we're running a terrific sale on Organic White Potatoes from Holton Farms in Westminster, VT. Pick up a 10-pound bag for just $3.89 -- and bring on the mashed potatoes!

4th Annual Canstruction This Year's Theme: A Place at the Table
November 17 - 23 At Monadnock Food Co-op & Keene State College
View sculptures made from cans and boxed food to spotlight Hunger Awareness Week. It starts with one can. Canstruction®, a charity committed to ending hunger, is using 'one can' as a catalyst for change. Over 500 families in the Monadnock Region access hunger relief programs supported by The Community Kitchen Food Pantry. All cans in sculptures will be used to fill this year's holiday pantry boxes. Extra canned food donations are also being accepted at the Co-op.

Equal Exchange, a worker cooperative, is excited to announce a new partnership with PRAGOR, a progressive group of small-scale avocado farmers in Michoacán Mexico.
This region of Mexico is called "the avocado capital of the world." However, powerful corporate interests have made it difficult for small-scale farmers to compete. In response, PRAGOR courageously organized and decided they would collectively control the entire process from growing to exporting. PRAGOR's strength and perseverance is a lesson for anyone committed to working for change in the world.

Winter squashes are a perfect match for the cold season in so many ways. Their dense, creamy texture, bold orange colors, and sweet, subtle flavors make them a cook's best friend in the winter kitchen. Use their sweetness to balance the other flavors in your dish, like the vinegar or lemon dressings I use in these recipes. I'm partial to roasting, because of the way it concentrates and caramelizes the squash, but you can steam, sauté, braise, or simmer your squash pieces in soup.

Shift Your Shopping November 1 - December 31
Plaid Friday Friday, November 29
Throughout the Monadnock Region & Nationwide
Celebrate Plaid Friday! Wear plaid to show support for our local economy and commitment to buying local this holiday season.
Over one dozen independent businesses will serve as Plaid Friday Hubs, including the Monadnock Food Co-op, taking photographs of people decked out in plaid for a Plaid Friday Collage. Also, anyone dressed in plaid who shops at the Co-op receives an extra treat from us! (While supplies last.)
Last year, Monadnock Buy Local raffled off over $1,000 worth of items - donated by locally owned businesses - to thank its fans, and we plan to do the same this year. If you use Facebook, please RSVP to our Plaid Friday 2013 Event Page and share it with your connections.
Make your commitment to shift at least 10% of your holiday purchases from non-local businesses to locally owned businesses known - take the Shift Your Shopping Pledge.
