Board Nominations
The Monadnock Food Co-op Board of Directors seeks candidates for this year's election. Three board seats are open and one board member is running for re-election. Please read more details below.
To be a director, you must be a Monadnock Food Co-op member-owner. Directors elected in 2013 will serve three-year terms ending in 2016. The Board Nominating Committee oversees the slate of candidates, and there are two ways you can run for the board:
1. Nomination through the Board Nominating Committee You can nominate yourself by submitting your name to the Board Nominating Committee via jay.smeltz@gmail.com. Potential candidates will be asked to submit a statement of interest and qualifications. Nominations are due by August 15, 2013. The Board Nominating Committee will then review all candidates and create a slate of nominees at their discretion.
2. Nomination by Petition If you would like to run by petition, you are required to collect the signatures of at least 50 other member-owners in good standing and submit your petition to the Nominations Committee. Candidates running by petition will be required to fill out an application packet and submit a digital photo. Informational interviews with the Nominations Committee are not required but are strongly suggested, and are available by appointment. Candidates may not submit petitions on behalf of another member-owner but only for themselves. Signed petitions are due by September 15, 2013.
Questions? Contact jay.smeltz@gmail.com.
All nominees for the Board election will be identified in a roster mailed to all Member-Owners in advance of our election and annual meeting.

Shopper Suggestions & Questions

Q: How come you don't offer senior discounts?
A: One goal that many co-ops share, including ours here in Keene, is to make local, healthy and nutritious food available to everyone, regardless of their income level. As a result, many co-ops across the country are shifting from an age-based discount (senior discount) to an income-based discount (Healthy Food For All). Our co-op will offer the latter program starting in September.
You may ask yourself, why not offer both an income level discount and senior discount? Unfortunately, we can't afford to offer both. Grocery stores operate off of incredibly small profit margins -- and during a good year, may only generate income equal to 1-3% of sales. Offering a 10% discount erases any income on those sales, so we must be very thoughtful about how much and how many discounts we offer.
Our Co-op is finalizing the details of our Healthy Food for All program which will provide a 10% discount to those in financial need. Look for more details this fall.
As always, we welcome your feedback about this program and ideas for how our Co-op can continue to meet our community's need for local, healthy and affordable food options.

We are grateful for what New England's farmers and fishermen grow and harvest: fresh food from the land and sea. But New England Farmers Union (NEFU) also recognizes that farmers and fishermen offer something more: their voices. When farmers tell their story, amazing things happen. For one thing, agricultural policy gets better.
"No one can tell our stories as well as we can," said Beth Hodge, who runs the dairy operations at Echo Farm in New Hampshire. "Our elected officials and legislators hear from lobbyists every day. We bring authenticity to the table, and we can speak to how laws and regulations will impact our businesses. We need to make sure that the stories that the public and our elected officials hear about New England Agriculture are OUR stories."

Sometimes, in the peak of summer heat, I have to hang up my canning apron. Even with the local produce overflowing, a gal can only stand so much heat. Too bad it's not advisable to fire up the canner in a bikini.
Luckily, pickle recipes that don't require canning are plentiful. There are fridge pickles, freezer pickles and fermented pickles. While you'll never be able to store these pickles at room temperature, chances are you'll devour them before you need that fridge space back.
