UpdatesI just want to thank everyone for their contributions in making our Co-op's Grand Opening a success. The days were filled with exciting events a fully stocked store, some really exciting promotions and great community participation.
Our next event is an Ice Cream Social Fundraiser to benefit Monadnock Farm & Community Coalition. See details below and we hope to see you there. At our Grand Opening Ceremony, you helped us launch our new Bag Tree - where shoppers can borrow a bag and return it next time they shop. The bag tree was heavy with reusable bags, but it is now bare! Please, if you have extra bags to donate or if you borrowed a bag from us last week, bring them in. Thank you. Our new coupon books are in and to make it especially easy this cycle we have placed tear-off coupon pads at the location of each item on the shelf. In combination with some of our current sale items, we have some excellent promotions. For example, just in time for summer, Knudsen spritzers are $2.50 a 4-pack with our 50¢ off coupon. Muir Glen Organic Salsa is priced at $2.25 a jar with our 75¢ off coupon. You can't beat those prices. Save the Date: Member Appreciation Day is Saturday, August 24th. More details coming soon.
Yours Cooperatively, Michael Faber Monadnock Food Co-op General Manager

Q: Why don't we have a member worker program like other co-ops?
A: Some food co-op's offer a "working member" program, where individuals volunteer to receive discounts on their co-op purchases. While there are pluses and minuses to this type of program, generally the national trend and recommendation is to avoid this program. Our co-op chose not to implement a discount program for the following reasons:
- Our Co-op is committed to providing fair wages and good benefits to our employees. Member worker programs often do not pay a minimum wage (in the form of a discount) for the work provided. Not only does this not fit within our values, it's against the law and some Co-ops have been fined for violations by the Department of Labor.
- Many stores have found it very difficult to keep volunteers up-to-date on the co-op's current rules, regulations and policies, as well as sufficiently trained on giving great customer service, when they only work 1 or 2 hours a week or month.
- We would have to cover volunteers under our workers compensation insurance, which can be very difficult if not impossible to do.

The local foods movement has taken root nationwide. Where other trends have come and gone, the local foods movement is stronger than ever, fueled by a growing desire for transparency in food production practices, knowing where our food dollars are going, and the sheer delight of eating a freshly-picked tomato.
It's a movement to which food co-ops are deeply committed, and have long supported. As the height of the local growing season spreads across the country, co-op grocers nationwide are celebrating the freshest, best, and most delicious local foods with the Eat Local, America! initiative. In fact, did you know that cucumbers are sometimes as much as 20 degrees cooler than the outside temperature? ("Cool as a cucumber" is quite literal.) Cucumbers' coolness serves as a counterbalance to hot foods: a cucumber raita with a spicy curry, for example, or a few slices of fresh cucumber on a spicy chicken sandwich. And don't forget pickled cukes; some of us won't serve a summer meal without them. Try this Recipe: Quick Cucumber Kimchi
