Dear Friends,

We launched our "Discover Local" promotion last week, and many of you probably received information in your email inbox already.  So far, 20 Member-Owners have sent our email template to 76 of their friends, family and neighbors -
and two people joined after receiving the email. Thank you!  Read more about our Discover Local promotion below.

Building Update

Dry wall continues to go up in the co-op building, really helping each section of the co-op take shape.  When we walk through the entrance it's the produce department we see, and it's getting easier to imagine it stocked full of all our favorite local and organic fruits and vegetables.

Produce Department coming soon!

Local Farm Updates

We received over 60 local product requests from you - from Flying Cloud Dairy Raw Milk to carrots from Temple-Wilton Community Farm.  We organized your suggestions and intend to reach out to these farmers and local food producers as we get closer to opening.

Co-op Team Updates

Welcome Glenn Sibley - our new Prepared Foods Manager! Glenn worked in the food service industry in Keene for over 17 years, and he has extensive bakery experience.  He'll make sure our bakery and deli offer high quality, good tasting, and nutritious food.

With the Co-op Team growing, we've moved to the second floor of the Hannah Grimes Center (a.k.a. Suite B). Please come visit us by entering through the door closest to the 25 Roxbury Street parking lot.

Yours Cooperatively,
Michael Faber

Discover Local Promotion
Like many of you, the Monadnock Food Co-op values local farmers, producers and our entire local food system.  Instead of waiting until we open in April 2013 to promote eating more locally-grown food, we're kicking-off our "Discover Local" promotion now.  This promotion will also help us reach 1,200 founding member-owners before opening.

Each month we'll raffle off two items - one to a new member-owner and another to a current member-owner - that help the winners eat more local food and/or connect with our local food system.

This Month's Discover Local Give-Away:
One Year Family Membership to

Sandy Hamm, Stonewall Farm's Development Coordinator and the Co-op's Membership Volunteer for many years, sports our new "Discover Local" t-shirt while showing us all the fun to be had at Stonewall's Discovery Room.

This Month's Discover Local Topic:
Farm & Garden Education Programs

Back in 2009, Monadnock Farm & Community Connection created a toolkit called Feeding the Next Generation that highlighted ten schools and community programs linking young people to local food in our region.  These Farm & Garden Education Programs (along with many others) cultivate more local food eaters, better learners, healthier individuals and our future farmers, gardeners and informed citizens.

Celeriac

By Liza Drew, RD

Flavorful Fact:

Though it was mentioned in Homer's Odyssey, celeriac (aka celery root) did not become commonly used until the 1600s, particularly in France, and is still unfamiliar to most Americans to this day.
