Dear Friends,
We're in the last month of 2012 - a year that brought us the International Year of Co-operatives and marked the last year that our region is without a food co-op! Here's how we're closing out 2012:
Building Update
This fall we made four energy efficiency upgrades to the co-op building made possible by Green Gap Funding LLC. Founded in 2012, Green Gap Funding is made up of local investors interested in accelerating Keene's progress towards a greener future. They raise funds through equity investment and loan it to suitable development projects. Our Co-op is their very first project!
Building upgrades summary:
- We added 2" rigid foam under the slab, improving insulation from R0 to R10
- We improved the wall insulation from R20 to R31
- We improved our roof insulation by adding additional foam changing the insulation from R20 to R40
- We upgraded our double pane windows to triple pane which increased our insulation from R2.22 to R4.17
 | Spray foam insulation, added to the wall cavities, makes for a more energy efficient co-op. |
Outside the building, crews added exterior masonry and if you visit the construction site now, you'll see green covering most of the building. That's the air barrier covering the wall insulation.
Local Farm Updates
We continue to form and strengthen relationships with local farmers and producers. We now have an extensive list of local products and would love to hear of your favorites -- so we can be sure they are on our list. Please share up to five of your favorite local products by emailing us. We will compare your feedback to our list and fill in any gaps.
Co-op Team Updates
As noted in our last Construction Update, we are recruiting for the Store Manager, P.O.S./IT coordinator and Meat & Seafood Manager positions. Please pass along this Job Openings Announcement to anyone who might be interested. Thank you. From myself and the Monadnock Food Co-op Board, we wish you the happiest of holidays.
Yours Cooperatively, Michael Faber Monadnock Food Co-op General Manager |
Our Co-op's Purpose
In our November Update, we asked you to identify your favorite Co-op Ends Policy, statements designed to keep us focused on our purpose. We'll look more closely at our Ends Policies in future updates; until then here's what 119 of you shared:

Citrus
By Liza Drew, RD
Flavorful Fact:
The average pound of food in America travels about 1,500 miles from farm to table; think a grapefruit traveling from Miami to Keene.
I hesitate to write about citrus fruits, as they often do travel long distances to reach our fruit baskets. However, their bright flavor and juicy texture are hard to live without, even for the most devout locavores. For my fellow citrus enthusiasts, I offer this advice: buy citrus in season (winter) when at least it is likely to have been grown domestically, and, especially if you plan to use the zest, it is best to buy organic citrus fruits.
