September 2012 Update
Building Update
Great construction progress continues on our building.  Right now the foundation footings and walls are going up in sections.  First a form for the footing is built and concrete is poured into it.  Next a form is built for the foundation wall and then that cavity is filled with concrete.  Several sections are already completed (see picture below).

Notice the pink r10 insulation against the surface of the wall.  Thanks to community support for this project and the Board of Director's commitment to a green building, we secured additional capital to make energy improvements to the building.  One improvement is to lay the same r10 insulation underneath the entire concrete slab (a.k.a. our floor) before it is poured.  This will help insulate the floor of the building from the surrounding cooler ground, making it more energy efficient.

Meanwhile, as construction moves along, we are finalizing specifications and the layout of store equipment and placing orders.  One piece of equipment we are currently working on is a combination hot bar/salad bar/soup bar unit that will be located towards the rear of the store in our prepared foods department.

This piece of equipment will be a great addition to the store, offering you a wide selection of fresh, hot and cold, ready-to-go foods. Our salad bar will feature many local and organic produce items.  We will also have dine-in ware, so you can enjoy a hot meal while sitting in our in-store seating area and enjoying a chat with your friends and neighbors.  The picture below is one example of what the equipment may look like.
Here's one model we're looking at from Industrial Support, Inc.

Message from the Board
By Jamie White, Board of Directors

The Monadnock Food-Co-op's 2nd Annual Meeting is just around the corner.  We have a lot to celebrate, from the start of construction to welcoming our 1,000th Member-Owner.  Three of us: Jay Smeltz, Susan Ashworth and I, are also celebrating the year anniversary of our nominations to the Monadnock Food Co-op Board of Directors.

Each year there are three openings on the Co-op's Board of Directors.  There are two ways to be considered for a position on the Board.  An interested member can submit a board candidate application which includes a statement of interest to the nominating committee, or a member can be nominated through a petition signed by signed by at least fifty eligible voting co-op members.  All candidates must be current Member-Owners in good standing. If you wish to submit a nomination petition the deadline is September 15, 2012 and can be submitted to board@monadnockfood.coop.

Why I Joined the Co-op

Wherever I lived, the community's food co-op became the place where I met new people, got involved with community initiatives and found local food (in between Farmers' Market days).  I can't wait for the Monadnock Food Co-op to become that place for the Monadnock Region come 2013!

Savor Our Seasons:
Corn

By Liza Drew, RD

Flavorful Fact:

Only 1% of the US corn crop is sweet corn; the rest is called dent corn and is mostly used for animal feed, high fructose corn syrup and ethanol.

There's something very satisfying about eating with our hands. Perhaps it's our primal instinct kicking in or maybe it's just the feelings on our fingers that heighten our other senses.
