Greetings!
Ray Winter 2011
As we approach the end of 2012 we at the boat shop have lots to be thankful for.  It is an especially fulfilling time as we have many projects lined up and progressing well and in some cases ahead of schedule.  Most importantly we have been very successful in this year's fund raising efforts.

As you will read in this newsletter, our various teams are moving forward without serious hitches. The raffle boat for 2013 is further along than any we have undertaken in the past 4 years.  Repairs of boats in our fleet are moving along with a sense of dispatch and the Herreshoff 12-1/2 has been mostly disassembled, except for the transom, and is ready to continue restoration with deteriorated timbers being replaced with new.

Now it's time to celebrate!  Join us at our annual raffle boat drawing in the Community Boat Shop, with wine and cheese, to discover who the lucky winner is. And plan to spend a fine evening holiday dinner party at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor, which always provides us with excellent wine and vittles.

Your Skipper,

Ray Hartjen

Open House R Drawing 12/10

This is the scene everyone is waiting for, the drawing of the winning raffle ticket.  It has been our custom to call upon some unsuspecting youth to make an unbiased pull of the winning ticket. Here, Kent Miller, our master of the raffle, prepares to read aloud a past year's raffle winner.

This year's boat has received rave reviews from people all over the East End where it has been on display in 10 venues, beginning in Greenport on Memorial Day weekend to Montauk in the fall.  Thanks to Tom Rosko who was the lead builder, with able volunteers.  If you missed the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for the boat and new Load Rite trailer, or would like to buy some more, you still have time, by (1) mailing a check made out to EECBS (with your phone number) to EECBS, PO Box 1784, East Hampton, NY 11937 ($5 a chance or 5 chances for $20), (2) visiting the Community Boat Shop any Wednesday or Saturday 9AM to 2PM, or (3) by attending our raffle boat drawing Saturday, December 15th, 4 to 6PM at the Community Boat Shop, located behind the Marine Museum at 301 Bluff Road, Amagansett.
News from the Boat Shop

In addition to building a raffle boat each year our members are busy at work restoring a Herreshoff 12-1/2 and maintaining other boats in our fleet.

Pierce Hance and Robert Vossen  are here contemplating what other items must be removed before the rebuilding will begin.  Immediately after this photo was taken the crew removed the stem which will soon be replaced with a new one, steamed to correspond to the shape of the original.

Jim Ritter, Ron Ahlers, and Robert Vossen hard at the task of wrestling the new stem into position within moments of leaving the steam box.

Richie Davgin and Nick Stephens are undertaking the repair of a plank that had split on the bottom of the Classic Boat Society's boat, the Constant, which is a replica of an 11-foot yawl Herreshoff designed for his own yacht, Columbia.

How is the Next Raffle Boat Coming?

Of course, there is much interest in the state of next year's raffle boat, the
Goeller Dinghy. Mid-fall saw us undertaking the detailed process of lofting her lines.

Burt Van Deusen and Don Schreiber are here working out some of the finer details.  Other members lent a hand, including myself, but none showed a finer skill at mastering the complex three dimensional representation of our new boat in two dimensions than Burt. He has a talent for working in different dimensions.

At this point in time, half way through November, we have all of the molds cut, and patterns for the stem, transom and stern knee.  The keel and keelson will be taken out of recently fallen white oaks thanks to Hurricane Sandy.  With the help of Mica Marder, son of the well known Charlie Marder, we have been able to harvest timber from fallen local trees and have them milled by Southampton resident Thomas Matthews.

Our goal is to have this boat ready for exhibition by Memorial Day 2013.

I look forward to your joining us at our two end of year events and to wish you well during this holiday season.
