Living in and with Conflict and Violence

On October 8 & 15 Wednesday at Grace will hear two different perspectives on living in places where there seems to be unending cycles of conflict and violence.  Many people in our world are affected by wars and armed conflict around them and these stories will help participants to see what is at stake as we are called to be peacemakers.  Join us for these two presentations by members of our community.

The Cycle of War

October 15, 6:45pm

Esther Brownsmith

This summer, Esther Brownsmith left Medford to work at an archaeological dig in Israel. She found that the excavations around her preserved three millennia of violence -- from 830 BCE, when Aramean King Hazael slaughtered the Philistine inhabitants, to 1948 CE, when the Israeli army razed the Palestinian village to the ground. But just as her dig was getting underway, the escalating conflict between Israel and Palestine showed that the area's violent history was far from past. Living within the zone of rocket attacks from Gaza meant learning to stay alert for the daily sounds of sirens and nearby explosions, as well as reading news reports about the far bloodier retaliations taking place within Gaza itself. Join Esther, a Grace parishioner and PhD student studying the Bible and ancient world, in a discussion about the tensions within Israel/Palestine, the impact of warfare in the past and present, and the hope for an escape from the cycle of violence.

"Godly Play for Grownups"

October 22, 6:45PM

Join us after dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 22 for "Godly Play for Grown-ups." One of our Godly Play instructors will present a story to the Adult Ed. class, alongside our Grades 1-2 students. Experience the meditative environment of Godly Play, and learn something new about how we are forming our children in the faith with creative exploration. You'll never say "I wonder..." in the same way again!

Local Historian Dee Morris presents "Boston in the Golden Age of Spiritualism"

Wednesday, October 29th

6:45PM

Local historian Dee Morris, will be talking about her new book, "Boston in the Golden Age of Spiritualism". Spiritualism flourished in Boston from the first rumblings of the Civil War until the early twentieth century. Numerous clairvoyants claimed to bring messages from beyond the grave at séances and public meetings. Motives for belief were varied. Wealthy John Wetherbee sought business advice through supernatural means. Psychic Fannie Conant attributed her restored health to spirit intervention. Grieving theater manager Isaac B. Rich wanted to contact his deceased wife. While many earnestly believed in the movement, there were those who took advantage of naïve Bostonians. Determined to expose charlatans, world-renowned magician Harry Houdini declared the famous medium and Bostonian Mina "Margery" Crandon a fake.
