The federal government is proposing to remove the protection of the Endangered Species Act from wolves nationwide. Nearly every wolf in the lower 48 already lives - and dies - where federal protections have already been removed. This is a politically driven (not science-based) action which essentially declares wolves recovered, when there are vast regions of suitable habitat where the wolf population is zero. Unlike the Bald Eagle, wolves don't have any other protective measures in place, such as the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, to protect them from renewed threats once federal protections have been lifted.
People don't eat wolves. Yet, wolves are in rapid decline right now, aggressively hunted and trapped, largely for recreation, where states are now "managing" them, even without this proposal. This proposal is premature. Wolf recovery is not complete.
Wolves need continued federal protection under the Endangered Species Act!
