E A S T  The East Austin Studio Tour 2013
November 16, 17, 23 & 24

The East Austin Studio Tour is here! This weekend and next the whole east side of town will be filled with art and art lovers.

I'm happy to be part of the fun  again this year at Stop No. 17I'll have lots of Tri-hexagon upcycled earrings jewelry on display as well as some new tiny encaustic originals. But that's just a small potion of what you'll find at the Adaptive Reuse Studios stop. The house will again be chock full of great art and plenty of hands-on demos for folks of all ages.

Hand-colored holga prints by Liz Potter This year Liz Potter will return with her amazing photography. I just found out she will also be debuting one-of-a-kind hand-colored images. Super excited!

Super sweet earrings from upcycled dishware

Holli Brown will once again display her lovely Dish It Out! jewelry line--all made from upcycled dishware. Rumor has it, she may also have a few of her beautiful mosaic pieces.

Amazing cigar box guitars by Tony Redman If music is your thing, Tony Redman will have several of his badass cigar box guitars here for you to check out. I love his upcycle-y approach to many of the guitar components. If you time your EAST visit right, you may even catch him playing a few of his resonant beauties.

I'm also fo Lovely Found Object Sculptures by Barbara Irwin rtunate to have an opportunity to show some of Barbara Irwin's stunning found object sculptures. I will have just a small sample on display and for sale here, so will encourage folks to swing by her amazing home studio, (just a couple of blocks away) so they can take in the full scope of her lovely work.

And, if all that isn't enough, you'll have a chance to try your hand at some encaustic painting, punching tin circles and mosaic making. All-in-all a heck of a stop--dont
cha think?

coming up

Nov 29 - Dec 24
10am - 10 pm

Right after EAST closes down it will be time to set up my wall for the 13th annual Blue Genie Art Bazaar. I'm excited to once again be part of what is by far the most artist- and customer-friendly art show in town. We get to display our work for the entire holiday season and you get to shop over 140 different designers, makers and artist all with one central checkout. What could be better than that?

Opening day for the show is Black Friday, so instead of fighting the crowds at the big boxes, why not stop by The Marchesa (right between Highland Mall and I35) and find really unique things all made by hand right here in the ATX. The show runs every day from 10 in the morning til 10 at night straight through Christmas Eve. Be sure to stop by for some of the best holiday gifts and to help support your local arts community.

  Delicious homemade applesauce

This is the easiest thing in the

world to make, yet it always

seems to surprise and delight.

It is total comfort food for me and isn't Thanksgiving without it.

Homemade Applesauce

Servings: 8 small portions

Ingredients:
4 McIntosh Apples
1/2 cup water
2 tbsp sugar*
1/2 to 1 tsp cinnamon*
dash of nutmeg
pat of butter

Directions:
Peel and dice apples. Pour the water in a medium-size pot, and set heat to medium-high. Place apples in the pot. You'll notice that only a small portion of your apples are covered in the water. No worries... your apples will start to reduce down to a quarter of the original size of the pot. Cook on medium-high for about five minutes. Reduce heat to medium and simmer apples stirring occasionally. Once your apples have reduced and broken down into very small pieces, add the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg & butter. Stir well. Done! Serve either warm or cold.

*Adjust sugar and cinnamon to taste. If you can't get it quite right, consider adding the smallest dash of salt or a bit of lemon juice to brighten the flavors.

write it up Art Jewelry Magazine

I'm excited to have my first how-to article published in this month's issue of Art Jewelry Magazine. I'd been thinking about doing this sort of work for a while, so I jumped at the opportunity when it landed in my inbox. This first article focuses on my reversible constructed pendants. I'm so pleased since it is a design I've worked with from the very beginning and feel I've really made my own.
