I'm excited I've found a place to teach some beginning encaustic painting workshops. Blue Moon Glassworks, a great shop right in the heart of the ATX has agreed to join forces with me to help folks get their wax on.

The first class is coming up on July 25th and is slated for kids 11+, but really is geared to kids of all ages. It will be a fun, fast paced class where you get to dive in and experiment with creating some mixed media masterpieces you'll be happy to hang on your walls. You can find all the details on my blog.

If you're completely unfamiliar with the process of painting with warm, pigmented beeswax, there are plenty of great instructional videos pinned to my Encaustic Class Resources board. If you have specific questions about the process or the class, feel free to get in touch with me.

18 Hands Gallery is hosting another show featuring nine regional artists and their upcycled jewelry creations. If you're in the Heights area of Houston in the next couple of weeks, be sure to stop by to see some innovative upcycled creations.   For more details...

The topic of making mistakes has been on my mind a lot lately. I think we have come to a place in our culture where we have lost our understanding of why mistakes are important to the learning process. I happened upon this little video of the 2012 Penn State Laureate, Chris Staley, the other day and found it insightful and touching. If you enjoy this one, you will likely enjoy some of the others in the series.

I know it's not environmentally friendly, but I do so love spray paint. If you use it to give new life to something old and otherwise destined for the scrap heap, I think it's at least a fair trade off. I've used it on lots of things, but never considered old baskets. I think these look pretty snaz.

July is National Ice Cream month and it's half over already, so get cranking on your daily celebration of this sweet occasion! And forget about the ice cream maker--do it in zip lock bags. Better yet, have the kids do it for you!

Ice Cream in a Bag
1 cup half and half or cream
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pint-size ziplock bag
1 gallon-size ziplock bag
Your favorite mixins such as chocolate chips, cereal pieces, or fresh fruit.
Ice cubes (enough to fill each gallon-size bag about half full)
1/2 cup rock salt

1. Combine the sugar, half and half, and vanilla extract in the pint-size bag and seal it tightly.

2. Place the salt and ice in the gallon-size bag, then place the sealed smaller bag inside as well. Seal the larger bag. Now shake the bags until the mixture hardens (about 5 minutes). Feel the small bag to determine when it's done.

3. Take the smaller bag out of the larger one, add mix-ins, and eat the ice cream right out of the bag. Easy cleanup too!

The hippest, eco-friendly shop in Calgary--Reworks Upcycle Shop--has been carrying my work for a year or so. Now I also have work on the way to another fab looking little shop in Edmonton--Sabrina Butterfly Designs. If your future travels take you to either of these towns, be sure to stop in and check out their nicely curated collections.
