2015 Micro Magic National Championship Regatta
Hosted by the West Valley RC Mariners at Estrella Mountain Ranch in Goodyear, AZ April 17-19, eighteen skippers from 6 states and the Netherlands competed in a forty races series. Winds ranged from drifting condition to 15 knots with stronger gusts.
Mike Eades won the first race to grab an early lead, which he would never relinquish. Baron Bremer captured 2nd
after making a late strong charge passing Jeff Weiss . Ron Stephanz enjoyed the light airs of day three to capture fourth at the expense of Frank Van Der Zwan. Follow the link for the complete results and a slide show.
2015 COW IOM Regatta Report
Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park on Lake Washington in Renton, WA
By Bob Wells
We schedule the COW for late April to early May for more consistent wind and to avoid weed. The plan has generally worked very well, although this year we had more light wind than usual. Still we ended Saturday pressed hard in top A-rig in serious waves, and enjoyed solid Saturday afternoon wind. Sailing in light air is a discipline too despite some naysayers, fortunately one that I enjoy. And the sun came out for much of our sailing with almost no rain, a much more pleasant situation than forecasted earlier in the week.
Californian Gary Boell sailed away with this one for a relatively low stress ranking regatta win, and he also maintained our tradition where nobody from Washington State wins our biggest Seattle MYC regatta. Gary was sailing in his first regatta with his new dark blue MOJO, and he was often noticeably higher and faster - fast right out of the box in other words. His big scimitar shaped rudder and the slick custom collar protecting his deck mounted drum caught my eye on this well prepared boat. Jerry Brower and Kelly Martin in particular took turns challenging Boells, but he held them off for a proper Worlds tune-up with a range of conditions. Our other Worlds skipper, Bruce Andersen, received needed race hardening as part of his Worlds prep, but he could only race the first day before he had to head home to Idaho. Jerry Brower finished second over Kelley Martin in third, but this wasn't determined until the last race. Likewise Joe Damico's fourth place over Bob Wells in fifth was in some doubt until after the last race.
I noticed all the local Seattle MYC boats are now of the modern skinny variety popularized by the Britpop, except David Jensen's Croatian PIKANTO. David is our newest regular from late last year, and he has a KantunSMX on order and coming soon. There are a few wider hulls sailing locally, but our evolution is close to complete. This happened faster than I thought it would, and as a group we are incrementally more competitive in our fifth year as an IOM fleet. We have so many skinny hulls that for my second regatta in a row I sailed a different borrowed spare BRITPOP, thank you Joe Damico and Steve Young for your generosity.
At COW regattas we combine the measuring process with a Friday afternoon gathering and evening dinner party at the home of Bob and Jackie Wells. Measuring Friday saves more time for sailing, and it is an excuse to socialize. Before dinner Bruce Andersen, our only Class Secretary candidate on the ballot, discussed his goals if elected and listened to concerns, but then I cut that short for our Skipper's Meeting and dinner. The party was another success as was our Saturday no host dinner at the nearby Red Robin Restaurant in Renton. We have the socialize part down.
For the second year in a row The COW is a USA ranking club regatta, drawing skippers from four states. This is easily our smallest COW yet in entry numbers, and it allowed single heat racing for the first time. A few local regulars had other commitments. I think Foster City Worlds in two weeks took precedence for a number of distance travelers. My guess is we had no Canadian entries for the first time because we happened to coincide with the unique Nanaimo RC Ocean Race, a favorite of the Herbert brothers. But we did have our Canadian, Barry Fox, who did a great job serving as our PRO. I always enjoy visiting with Barry, who is our IOM ICA Secretary.
Our brief awards ceremony had five very special prizes this year, excellent hand made lanyards reading "IOM USA" donated by Bruce Andersen. I emphasize excellent in describing them, thank you Bruce. We look forward to hosting the COW next year, and as they say on my Son's favorite rerun, "Same bat time. Same bat channel (...substitute "schedule" for our purposes)". Yes, we have a local regatta this coming weekend too.

CMBC/ WRMYC NE Ohio Club Challenge
Western Reserve Model Yacht Club was pleased to host nine Members of the Cleveland Model Boat Club for the 3rd Annual NE Ohio Club Challenge Regatta, Event I, on Saturday, May 23. This is a competition between the two NE Ohio clubs, racing Soling 1 Meters. The scores of the Top 4 finishers from each club are added, and form a club score. Cleveland MBC has won each of the two previous year's Challenge Regattas. Twenty skippers- 9 from Cleveland Model Boat Club (CMBC) and 11 from Western Reserve Model Yacht Club (WRMYC) met at the WRMYC home pond in Painesville (OH) Kiwanis Recreation Park for the first of this year's 2 club challenge events.
The day was bright and clear with winds 1 to 4. Early in the morning, winds were steady from the predicted WSW, but as race time approached, they clocked around to be generally from the North. The start line was crowded for 20 boats but all managed to get through, with few early starters. Most Heats consisted of a short beat (3 tacks) to a starboard rounding of Mark 5 in the NW corner of the pond. This leg was very interesting as a preferred starboard-tack start took boats close to the shore, before calling for "sea-room" to clear shore. Then, two more tacks were needed before approaching the windward Mark A. This crowded Starboard-tack rounding of Mark A was followed by a run down-lake to either a mark some 200 feet South, or in about half the races- a LONG run of 400 feet to Mark B, located in the SW corner. Being a run- there was little separation of the fleet- so the second (again Starboard tack) rounding was also usually very crowded. The final leg of the "sausage" course was a long beat back to the Finish. The racing was very competitive, with finishes having 2, 3 or even more boats overlapped at the line.
Dan Reiber, of the Cleveland MBC, won the event, edging out Mike Wyatt from Western Reserve by 4 points. Dan started off with mid-fleet finishes or 9-6-11-2-and 15 for the first five heats. Then, he found the secrets of the fickle wind on Rec Park's pond, and closed up the balance of 12 Heats with all 2's and a 1- very consistent- to win the regatta. Dan and second-place finisher Mike Wyatt have raced sailboats for years- each having competing in FJ's going back to the 1980's. Dan only recently took up RC sailing, wisely buying several Soling 1 Meters in FL, and bringing them back north. He's learned fast, as the results show. In third was Ted Lutton, also from CMBC. In the club competition, CMBC beat WRMYC by a score of 192 to 211. This time, WRMYC put more sailors in the top positions, making it a closer event than in previous years.
The second event of the NE Ohio Club Challenge series takes place August 1, hosted by CMBC at Borrows Pond, in North Ridgeville, west of Cleveland.

2015 White Rock Cup
The 17th annual White Rock Cup had already been rescheduled , and furious storms on Friday night seemed to threaten the regatta being run on Saturday, but when we arrived in the morning, the debris cleared , the wind filled in and we had a fantastic day of Racing at White Rock Lake.
There was an unusual North wind which created a solid steady chop for the smaller RG boats, instead of the south wind swells we usually experience. This also made for some challenging conditions with these smaller waterline boats , so tacks had to be precise, and there was little room for error at the windward mark!
4 Open RG65s and 13 Dragon Forces raced for the Region 5 RG65 Championship and we had some incredibly tight and fun racing!
The day started light and the Open Rg65s with swing rigs were very consistent at the front of the field but as the day went on and the winds picked up, the Dragon Force boats seemed to excel.
Chris Macaluso from the Lone Star Model Yacht Club , showed his mettle as he reeled off several bullets and claimed the first major RG65 regatta won by a Dragon Force RG65! Chris is also the reigning Texas Dragon Force Series champion , and his consistent practice excellence with the DF was paid off with his first White Rock Cup victory!
Chris beat Eric Rosenbaum sailing his Yahoo, and Brig North who was also sailing a Dragon Force!
The fleet managed 21 races for the one day regatta!

2015 ODOM REGION 6 CHAMPIONSHIP
by Rob Weaver
What could be better than the longest day of the year, the first day of summer and father's day in San Francisco? Simple, two days of racing Odoms on Spreckels Lake for the Region 6 Championship. 23 Odom sailors braved the balmy San Francisco summer on June 21 and 22 and enjoyed 17 races hosted by San Francisco Model Yacht Club. The races were presided over by race director John Super and organized by the Jason Spiller, with the competent help of Michael Fischer (who chose race duties over competition), Nancy Barbata (scorekeeper) and 9 other SFMYC volunteers. Charlie Roskosz, a US Sailing Judge, graciously volunteered his time to hear protests and resolve disputes.
The racing started on Saturday, but preparation started the day before when at least 10 competitors spent the afternoon tuning their boats and testing the fickle winds of Spreckels Lake. Racing proceeded on Saturday, with the fleet split into 2 heats for each race. The race director utilized the odd/even method to mix competitors in each successive heat. After 17 races (34 heats, 2 throw-outs) the Odom class secretary, Jess Atkinson, emerged as the overall winner. Jess finished with 11 first place finishes, outdistancing Larry Grant and Gary Boell who finished 2nd and 3rd overall. Alan Finley barely finished out of the medals, trailing Gary by only 2 points for a 4th place finish. In between racing, Jess generously assisted may of the fleet members with tuning and trimming advice. He still won, but he also made a lot of the participants get to the finish line faster. Racing on Saturday was under mild wind conditions of 8 - 12 mph. On Sunday the wind increased, with sudden gusts of 15 - 18 mph. By Spreckels standards, the winds were steady and manageable. Still, most sailors found the variable shifts, gusts and "holes" challenging on both days. Only on the second day did Spreckels show its true colors by driving the bows of half of the fleet underwater and creating the out of control chaos that SFMYC members have come to expect as a regular occurrence on race day. There is nothing so disheartening as to see your boat nearly sink and find it passed by 4 -5 others before you regain control. Likewise, some sailors saw comfortable leads vanish when they sailed into areas of no wind while their competitors had plenty of wind just 30 - 40 feet away. Then again, this is the challenge of Spreckels Lake, a challenge that the members of SFMYC have been meeting for more than 100 years.
In the end, everyone had at least one good race. Of the 23 competitors, 10 of them logged in first place finishes, and 17 different sailors had races where they finished in third place or better. Jess may have taken the series, but the racing was just as intense throughout the fleet and everyone had a moment in the sun.
SFMYC ably hosted this event, with a large staff and crew that assured friendly (but sometimes intense) competition for all. In the clubhouse after the awards were given to Jess, Larry and Gary, discussions were already underway for the next championship that could be held at SFMYC.

The Texas Dragon Force Series
added a new host this year and a great turnout of 17 skippers competed at the Sun City Model Yacht Club venue in Georgetown, TX!
As usual at the Sun City venue, there were at least 50 spectators on hand to witness some great racing under the hot Texas sun!
Once again however, Chris Macaluso stayed cool in the heat and edged out Chuck LeMahieu and Phil Runquist in shifty conditions with winds ranging from 3-12 MPH. Chris consolidated his series lead over Chuck and Bob Piper who had 2 firsts on the day and moved into 3rd overall. Clearly Bob is longer eligible for his traditional mid fleet hacker role and is a force to be reckoned with in the Series!
Jerry Tippitt rocketed to the lead of the Masters standings, finishing 6th on the day! Jerry is just ahead of Chuck Porth and Fred Sheldon at the halfway point of the year.
An exciting Texas DF Series tradition has been introducing new skippers to fun of Dragon Force racing, and the Austin race was no exception, as we welcomed new DF skippers Bob Sobotik, Carl Rackley, and Phil Wright to the series!
The total number of skippers who have raced DFs in 2015 Series is now at 31 boats! This is the same number as we had in our inaugural 2014 season, and we are only at the halfway point!!
The Series takes the hot month of August off so the next DF race action will be in Houston, Sept 5. Don't miss it!
Make sure to sign up for the inaugural Dragon Force USA National Championship which will be held at White Rock on Oct 31 / Nov 1. If there are duplicate numbers first registered will not have to add an additional number to their sails, so register early!!
We will be designing a great giveway for the regatta, and we already have 5 sponsors committed to the series who will donate over $1500 in retail product ( with hopefully more to come)!!
Note the start mark in the lower left of the photo!
The STAR 45 R2 Regional Championship was held at the famed Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum on Sunday, July 19th. We had seven quality skippers anxious to race and promote this wonderful RC model boat. Race Directors, Dave Branning and Elaine Hepkin organized this regatta as a low key event to promote the Star 45 in the area and Roger Baldwin and Dave Littleton were sailing brand new boats. Dave Brawner borrowed Alex Ramos' Star 45, racing it for the first time. The weather man said it would be "really hot with little wind" but he was wrong. We did have terrifically consistent 4-7 knot breezes on the course that stayed in the SW quadrant all day. We never had to move the marks and we shared the course with over a dozen Skipjack modelers who were enjoying racing their home built models. It was a great way to enjoy our sport, sharing the race course with fun skippers sailing two RC models.
Dave Ramos showed up with three boats. One he sold. One he lent to Dave Brawner and one he sailed and, by the way, he won by one point. He was a busy guy helping all get tuned up and he nosed out Dave Brawner for first. Dave Brawner figured out this boat pretty quickly as he won the first race and three others over the 9 race day. As Nick Mortgu would say, Dave Branning was a distant third, and I was. Dave shared his transmitter with our excellent photographer, Jim Flach, for a couple of races and Jim won the fifth race. Ryan Lippincott came down from Riverton, NJ with daughter Ava and finished fourth on the day. Ryan was followed by Roger Baldwin, Dave Littleton and Rick Ferguson.
Thanks for the day go to all the skippers who traveled on a Sunday to be with us. Rick Ferguson came all the way from Raleigh, NC, to race his Star 45. Rick's a dedicated guy and a terrific promoter of our sport. Thanks to Elaine and Ava for lunch duty; scoring and also to an "under the weather, Ken Shaw, who called the line and kept us moving, even though he was not moving too much. A tip of the hat to Roger Baldwin and Jim Flach who helped button up the buoys and chase boat. I appreciate the hosting of the Skipjack fleet, especially Gary Nylander, who arranged our sharing of the venue with the Skipjack skippers.

2015 Seawind Regional Championship
The Richmond MYC hosted its second Seawind Regional Championship on June 13th
and 14th, 2015, at Lake Rooty in Glen Allen, VA. Conditions on the lake were challenging, but not too difficult, although temperatures for the weekend were extremely HOT, reaching the mid 90's by midday both days. The breeze fluctuated in direction and velocity for most of the weekend, primarily coming from the north/northwest, with speeds ranging from a few knots to gusts of 10-12 or so. There were only a few brief instances where the wind laid down completely; only to pick back up a few minutes later. Twenty-five races were scored for the weekend. The venue at Lake Rooty is ideal for RC sailing, as shade trees provide excellent cover from the sun for most of the length of the paved walk, which runs within the control area. This proved to be a huge benefit as temperatures soared over the weekend. Skippers from three states attended the regatta, with Class Secretary Mike Eades coming in from the Phoenix area of Arizona, and friends Ron Small and Steve Helander attending from the Greensboro Model Yacht club in our neighboring state of North Carolina. Ten entries were received, however our friend Al Anderson was unable to race, so the racing went off on Saturday morning with nine boats on the water.
Mike Eades started off the regatta in his usual top form by firing off three bullets right
out of the gate. Fourteen races were run on Saturday, and at the end of the day the top
three competitors were separated by a mere 15 points, as racing tightened up. By the end
of the afternoon only two points separated the top two boats of Mike and Rob Suydam of
the RMYC, with five of nine boats racing in the regatta scoring at least one bullet.
Competition, as is it usually is in the Seawind class, was close and spirited, while being
good natured and fun at the some time. All penalties and fouls were acknowledged and
resolved on the water quickly, while being few and far between. Racing was close and
clean! In many of the races over the twodays there were not more than 10 or 15 seconds
separating the first five boats across the line. The line watchers had to be on their game
indeed, for quite a few excitingly close finishes. A matter of inches, typical of close
Seawind one design class racing, decided several of the races. In consideration of the
heat and return travel times for some of the competitors, it was decided that on Sunday
racing would begin early, with no race beginning after 1:00, skipping the lunch break,
and avoiding the hottest part of the afternoon. Plenty of snacks and beverages for competitors were provided.
Sunday, 11 more races were run, as RD David Lawrence kept the starts coming, with very little time between heats, except for the usual 10 minute break after each set of three
races. As the day went on, the cream began to rise to the top, as Mike, Rob, and Steve
Helander began to separate themselves from the rest of the field. Steve made the biggest
day to day move of the weekend, moving up three spots from sixth to finish third in
regatta by a slim margin of four points behind Rob Suydam. Steve, sailing his carbon
fiber edition Seawind, really began to get dialed in on Sunday, taking three bullets on the
second day. Consistently high finishes by Rob Suydam over the weekend placed him in
second for the regatta. Mike Eades, in his typical championship form, ran away with first
place in the regatta on Sunday by a margin of 26 points. After the presentation of
awards, Mike was asked what his secrets to winning so many regattas were. His response? In a nutshell- preparation, boat speed, and course position. Look for a detailed
article by Mike in the coming edition of the Seawind Express, the SCOA newsletter, sharing his winning techniques and strategies.
The RMYC is quite fortunate to have the sponsorship support for our regattas of the
Legend Brewing Company, makers of the best micro-brewed beer in Richmond, thanks
to PJ Seay. Many thanks are also owed to Craig Huzway of Breaking Wind Boats for
creating the Seawind "S" logo trophy plaques, which had brass plates for each podium
finisher mounted, and looked fantastic. Thanks also go to Al Anderson for his support
and brass award plates, as well the entire RMYC for their willingness to contribute to the collective effort needed to put on this event.
Last, but certainly not least, appreciation goes to Bobbie Lawrence and Doug Barry, who did a great job of watching the marks, keeping score, being sure the coolers were stocked
with cold beverages, and delivering lunch on Saturday. Big thanks to Bobbie and Doug!
