Model Boatyard
This video has been floating around the internet and I wanted to make sure you custom builders had seen the technique. Brad Gibson, IOM designer and sailor, shows you how he makes a plug/mold of one of his designs. If you have ever watched guys shaping surfboards, this is the same idea. Once shaped, you can pull a deck and hull off of the mold, or use it to make a female mold for larger production runs! I have done both the balsa strips over stations and shaping foam, and this is much faster than the balsa method.

For the purists out there, I have been following this wood build of a Goth RG65 (Frank Russell design) by Trevor Fisher. You can't beat this technique for the pure beauty of a wooden hull.

An Open Invitation in San Francisco:

Any AMYA member visiting San Francisco who wants to try sailing in the fluky winds of Spreckels Lake in Golden Gate Park is more than welcome.  We have a small fleet of Club-owned
Victorias (both Silver and Gold) and a Club
ODOM. With dozens more R/C model yachts in our boathouse just across the street, you're sure to find someone who would be willing to loan you one.  Send an email to Michael Fischer fischer@igc.org and he'll put you in touch with a member to get you on the water almost any day of the week. Check out this 2-minute video of Spreckels Lake on a low-wind winter day:

SeaWind
Winter Blast 02/21/2015 - West Valley RC Mariners, Litchfield Park, AZ

With temperatures in the high 60's to mid 70's the SeaWind Class Winter Blast Regatta did not quite live up to its billing. 12 Skippers braved the elements to find the usual light and shifty winds starting out from a north by northeasterly direction which necessitated RD, Mike Eades, setting the weather marks well out towards the far shore and the leeward gate close in shore to get any degree of windward leeward for a course. That seemed to work out OK until after lunch when the course required a complete reversal. The first 3 races saw three different skippers take bullets which set the tone for the day. In all 7 skippers took bullets out of the 12 races completed (2 throwouts). While Dennis Desprois took most bullets at 4, the more consistent sailing of Allan Vinson and Hal Birkey netted them first and second places respectively. A good reward for their recent steady improvement! Stephen Cooper was delighted with his first ever bullet in a club regatta and followed it up with a second and third. Now if only he could eliminate those disasters! Tom Woods, who bought the club boat only a week ago, produced a steady performance for 8th place showing he will become a force to be reckoned with.

1. Allan Vinson 26pts
2. Hal Birkey 31
3. Dennis Desprois 32
4. Ray Dagenais 36
5. Peter Jennings 38
