Have You Noticed?

There are some very useful changes that have been made to the AMYA Regatta Schedule.  Of course, there are more entries this years than in the past.  Thank you for submitting your regatta and to Ernie Thorpe for maintaining the page.  Once the regatta has been submitted, Ernie makes sure that the proper chevrons are sent for your regatta.

Some functionality that has been used for quite a while on class websites was added to the AMYA Regatta Schedule such as the ability to post a link to your NOR and registration form.  Online regatta entry is even offered if you want it.  As more and more classes and clubs take advantage of these services, the AMYA Regatta Schedule will be even more valuable to all of us.

Thanks for taking the time to list your regatta on the schedule.

REGATTA RESULTS

2014 Marblehead National Championship

The 2014 AMYA Marblehead Class National Championship regatta was sailed on the weekend of May 17-18 in Marblehead, and the venue was Redd's pond, the birthplace of the M Class. Ten Ms competed, making for a fun weekend.

After a rain delay due to a frontal passage on Saturday, the wind settled in Southwest 3-10 mph and faded as the day went on. Sunday started out with a brisk Northeast wind which faded, shifted to Southwest, and then faded to nothing. The courses were mostly windward leeward twice around. The twenty-six races sailed provided plenty of excitement and opportunity to strategically sail.

This years NCR brought all Marblehead's under AMYA rule onto the pond and greeted with open-arms, it proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that boats from different eras can compete in extremely close competition on the same race-course if managed appropriately.  Most of the races were highly competitive, and typically several boats were in contention at the front of the fleet. Lead changes occurred throughout many races, and the race course was long enough to warrant long term tactical maneuouvers. The quality most needed in the challenging wind conditions was consistency in order to win.

The scores indicate precisely what one would expect, With newer "Modern Designs" taking a point advantage over the "Classic" designs in overall scores.  But that's not to say that a Classic jumped up and took a pole position on a regular occurrence.  And in some instances they finished first overall for the heat.  The same rules of racing engage on the race course, and skippers were scored overall as well as within their division making for some extremely satisfied skippers.  Some 40 points separate all "Modern" division boats. And only 30 points separate "Classic" division boats, Proving that the design criteria set forth by Marblehead Class executives is accurate.

Trophies for the first three places in each group were awarded. The winner overall and in the Modern Division was Standley Goodwin. Second was John Whalen and third was Eddie Wolfe. In the Classic group it was Jim Linville taking the lead, and 6th overall. Second was Herb Dreher and third was Rick Gates.

Our RD and scorekeeper Craig Speck did a wonderful job keeping the regatta organized, moving, and setting our courses with wind-shifts.  Three throw outs were used on 26 races, resulting in 23 scored races.   Twenty three races!

This data gives a fantastic baseline for future Marblehead Class growth.  It substantially proves that any M can be sailed on the same race course within divisional criteria, and not impede the results of others. Starboard tack stays on!

It's this basis that should bring twice the turnout for the 2015 Marblehead Class National Championships.  There truly is no such thing as an "Obsolete" Marblehead.

We had a fantastic crowd turnout, including some Visitors from England, and a Local TV station filming our races to be broadcast on TV. Multiple press releases were made to the Marblehead Reporter and the pond was buzzing with activity.

We have many, many photos (60 of them actually) which may be viewed at the following link:

The Schmidt's Sweep Squaw Island Regatta
Admiral Nelson

There was a ban on motor boats on several of the Finger Lakes, including Canandaigua Lake. Even though no motor boats were allowed on the lake the RC Laser Fleet 14 had their Squaw Island Regatta off the south dock at CYC.  Ten RC Lasers and one Soling participated in the event.  The winds were out of the North 5-7 knots which would have made for an excellent race one mile up the lake to Squaw Island and back. Instead, There was a Le'Mans warm up race to get everyone's boat in the water and then a total of 5 races were booked around the docks at Canandaigua Yacht Club.

There were 10 Race Participants:
#194-Maggie A
tkins
#172-Neil Atkins

#62- Jonathan Gorbold
#54-Nelson Habecker

#272-Anne Lambert
#81- Jay N
iggli

#477-Eric Rueckwald
#59-Gary Schmidt
#88-
Mary Schmidt
#71-Terri Schmidt
Soling-Bill Schmidt

After calculating the scores based on low points no throw outs it was:
1st Place:  Gary Schmidt
2nd Place: Terry Schmidt
3rd Place: Mary Schmidt
*An award was also given to Bill Schmidt for finishing first with his Soling.
Since he was the only Soling we asked him if he preferred to be scored first or last and he wisely chose first.

The Holiday Cookout followed with Jack Bennett as Chef, and Nelson (Fleet Captain) presenting awards.

 2014 Nor'Easter EC12 Regatta - Newport, CT
Chuck Luscomb

The Nor'Easter is now in the books. Saturday was most likely one of the best if not the best day we have ever had in Newport. We had a few new guys as well as a number of regulars. Six boats from MD, two boats from VT, Six from CT and one from RI made up our 15 boats.   Cooler temps with S to SSW breeze 8-10 building a bit by the end of the day.   The forecast for Sunday was for SW to W at 20-30kts so the plan was to push the racing on Saturday longer in hopes of making it to 18 races for the event.   We sailed until 5pm and were able to complete 15 races so three short of our goal.

The fleet was tightly packed all day with the distance from first to last by at the finish not very far at all. Turns were done without pressing and there was not a single sour exchange all day. We had a number of spectators and a cheering section for Dave Brannings "Tomato" Boat. Lots of laughter and high fives between the top skippers. The crash boat went out a few times but not nearly as many times as last year and overall, the fleet handled gear failures quickly and within the holds.

As the day progressed, it looked to many like Dave VanCleef simply had the chops to stay in front in most every race posting 6 bullets for the day and a host of other low point finishes. The fight seemed to be for second as Ramos, Rinehart and Luscomb populated the slots from 2nd to 5thmost of the day.

Other notable mention needs to go to boats that appeared at the start for every race and finished every race. There were only a few that did not have a DNS or a DNF somewhere in the score sheet. Those were Mark Rinehart, JD Langdon and Al Dion.  Al Dion lost his rig and some internal rigging when he hit the dock on the way back in from the last race before lunch. He indicated he was done for the day but when we looked his boat over, it did not look that bad... We changed rigs to his B and got his sheeting system repaired and he came out after lunch with some speed that no one else had. He was pretty happy he stayed.Dinner was held at Coddingtons Brewery and I have to tell you that normally, in a 15 boat fleet like this, not everyone comes to the dinner so the reservation was made for 10. The head count at the skippers meeting was 11 confirmed and by mid day, that grew to 15 and by dinner, we had 18 all at the same table. What a great time.

Sunday, well... we all arrived at the site on time and got ready to sail with the breeze piping over the top of FT Adams. Wind gauges showed 8-10 with a few gusts to 15. This was 9 am. We decided to try to get our two races in at min and we began launching boats. By the time we had gotten our first start off, the gusts were closer together and higher. The fleet managed to make it around the first mark with VanCleef clear ahead by a 1/4 leg.   By the time the fleet was all on the first run, a huge gust came and flattened the entire fleet in one shot. We are talking all boats on the course on their side and rounding up at the same time. A few narrow misses as they did that which caused a universal response which was "We are all done". With that, the fleet came in with no regrets and happy to still be afloat.

SO without getting the last three races, we only had two throw outs. The top four boats were very close in points and it came down to throw outs.   Dave VanCleef sailed by far his best event with most races ending with a bullet. One or two mid fleets and a DNS which he could not toss pushed him out of the expected top spot. The other three were also close and what paid dividends were not bullets but consistency in staying near the top. After the scores were tabulated and checked, it came down to four boats with 8 points between them. Amazing.

The final points looked like this.

1 Chuck Luscomb 36pts

2 Dave Ramos 41pts

3 Mark Rinehart 42pts

4 Dave VanCleef 44pts

5 Al Dion 57pts

6 David Dellenbaugh 72pts

7 David Branning 80pts

8 JD Langdon 98pts

9 Tim Stone 130pts

10 Victor Oberg 143pts

11 Bob Shluger 144pts

12 Dave Hammett 148pts

13 Jon Pelly 169pts

14 Brian Kerrigan 174pts

15 Rodger Baldwin 185pts

Special thanks to Dan Crowley, our RD both days and Ron Rhault who assisted on Saturday. We would also like to thank Sail Newport and FT Adams State Park for their generosity in allowing us to use such an amazing site for our event.

Jacksonville Model Yacht Club Apr 26/27th 2014

The Comfort Suits Hotel in St. Augustine was the venue for the Jacksonville Model Yacht Club's EC-12 Regatta and the last regatta of the Florida Assoc for 2014. Racing started with 27 Skippers divided by the Class Seeding list. The wind filled from the NW at 3-5 Mph and we had a beautiful sunny day with Temp in the High 70s.

Alan Perkins continued to dominate the Florida series for a total day1 score of 24Pts. Steve Pfeil 41, Joe Walter 49, Dick Hedderick with 50and Gerhard Kelter with 52. Bob Greer was close behind with 56.

Sunday the wind was very light 0 - 3 Mph. It proved to be a real challenge for the skippers and the race staff. The wind was out of the South which meant it had to go around and over the 6 story hotel to get down to the lake. With this boomerang shaped lake, it meant we had light and swirling winds coming from two main directions. We started from right side and Alan Perkins managed to score a bullet. We moved the course again in the hope of getting a better beat to windward but with the swirling wind many skippers found the course very challenging. Alan Perkins had done enough in the early heats to distance himself from the rest of the fleet taking 1stwith 27 Pts.
2nd  Dick Hedderick 46 Pts
3rd  Steve Pfeil          51 Pts
4th Joe Walter            52 Pts
5th  Gerhard Kelter    57 Pts

Alan Also took the Florida EC 12 Championship for the third year in a row.

Many thanks to all the staff, Robbie Susan for tirelessly watching buoys and start / finish lines with me and to my wife Trish for managing to keep the score to the bitter end, to Garrett for all the boat rescuing and of course Ken Morrison for his passion and love of the sport and kept a keen eye on all races noting each and every foul. My thanks to all who helped make this event the success it was, and to all the skippers who graced our event by their participation and good humor.
