REGATTA RESULTS

2013 Micro Magic R3CR
by Daniel Pearce

The Villages Model Yacht Squadron hosted the 2013 Micro Magic R3 CR on November 16 and 17, at the Ashland Pond racing venue in The Villages, Florida.

Saturday's forecast of 8 to 10 did not materialize but Race Director Alan Perkins coaxed just enough air to get started on schedule at 9:30 A.M. Light and variable prevailed throughout the morning and overcast skies suggested rain for the afternoon. Ten heats were carded before lunch with Jacksonville ace Baron Bremer showing skill and patience. The afternoon brought drizzle then rain and Perkins called the day at 2:30 with 16 heats in the books. Saturday's bullets were shared by Bremer, Jack Ward of Punta Gorda, Martin Gray of Jacksonville and Ron Stephanz of Huntsville, Alabama.

George Balaschak, in from Palm Beach Gardens, struggled with some open seams in his new boat until Director Perkins shared a secret quick fix using a well known bathroom lubricant. With Balaschak's bottom well "greased" and early troubles "behind" him, his afternoon efforts at the pond were much improved.

The Saturday night "dutch" dinner at the Arnold Palmer Country Club provided some relaxed relief from an otherwise

trying day on the water which most called "still and wet". The dinner was lively and wet and enjoyed by all.

Sunday conditions were better but continued light. Perkins set several challenging courses and at the end of the day it was Bremer by 20 over Jack Ward using a low point scoring system. Seventeen skippers vied for trophies with two from Alabama and nine representing The Villages Micro Magic Racing Fleet. Three gals were among the entrees and Liz Perkins took home the top ladies prize.

The Suncoast Model Yacht Club on the south west coast of Florida hosted a two -day regatta in the Florida Championship Series. The fleet was divided for P/R using the class ranking list.

December 7, 2013 Twenty three boats hit the water and despite the very light and variable wind conditions we were able to get in five races before lunch. Going in to the lunch break Jack Ward and Jon Luscomb were tied for 1st, closely followed by Gerhard Kelter, Dick Hedderick, Martin Grey and Alan Perkins.

The afternoon session changed to the side favoring north or south winds. Once again it was very light and variable. The top six positions changed with Perkins leading followed by Kelter, Hedderick, Gray, Ward and Luscomb. It would be safe to say that the rest of the fleet had its ups and downs. However, the day produced two major highlights for the lady skippers. Judy Clarke moved from the B fleet to the A fleet for the first time (later she keep her clothes pin as a trophy) and Brenda Pardee scored her first victory in the A fleet.

Dinner was held that evening at Riviera Oyster Bar and Grill. This little back woods spot on the water was just great! Raw oysters, grilled and fried seafood. Numerous stories were told of how I could have done this if the wind had done that.......

Sunday the winds were for the most part easterly and steady between 4 mph and 10 mph which helped get in an additional six races before the "bell" rang. By the end of the day the five trophy winners were: Alan Perkins 1st; Dick Hedderick 2nd; Jon Luscomb 3rd; Gerhard Kelter 4th and Martin Gray 5th.

A salute goes to Suncoast Commodore Jack Ward for organizing the regatta and Race Director Art Hawes for keeping it running smoothly. And a cheer for the rest of our members who turned out to help!!!

by Tom Phillips and David Brawner

The FREEZE YOUR BUTT OFF regatta is a one day regatta organized by David Brawner, Nick Mortgu and crew in Mt Laurel, NJ and held Dec. 8   They like to challenge mother nature. This year it lived up to its name.

David Brawner - 2013 FYBOR
David Brawner

David wrote: Well this is going to be the FYBOR that we talk about for quite awhile. For starters, Bing Crosby should have been there singing "I am dreaming of a white regatta...". Every weather forecast said we might get a light dusting of snow starting around 3pm. Somehow that translated into snow falling at a rate of 2" an hour starting at 11:30. By the time we finished with lunch and trophies, there were 5" of snow on the ground.

The original plan was to sail a dozen races. When we realized the forecast was completely inaccurate, we limited the event to six races followed by Nick's delicious chilli and the trophy presentation where everybody ends up with something worth wearing.

The top six, Ramos, Betz, Rinehart, Mote, Walton and Ewing all earned the privilege of starting at the LoE. Skip Hall sailing in and completing every race ended up in the top half of the fleet. Newcomer, Bill Sysyn saved his best for the last race when he earned a second place.

As always, Nick Mortgu was the star of the FYBOR. While the chilli was perfect for a cold day, the assortment of clothing that he lays out on the table as trophies is incredible. Thank you Nick!! 14 Skippers of some questionable sanity participated.
