REGATTA RESULTS

2013 Rio Grande Cup for RG65s
by Earl Boebert

The Rio Grande Cup began six years ago as a club regatta aimed at promoting the RG65 class within the Duke City Model Yacht Club, which was the first to adopt RG65s in the U.S. It gradually grew over the years to include skippers from adjacent states, and this year saw a jump in participation in both numbers and distances traveled to attend.

The cup itself is a trophy topped by a small item of Navajo silverwork. Additional trophies are awarded for second through fourth place. This was the first year that required a fleet or group scoring system. The Race Committee and Club officers chose a variation of odd/even scoring in which the groups were periodically reinitialized so that the top skippers met each other more often than by chance. Eleven races were scored with one discard. In addition, a Sportsmanship Trophy was awarded based on a vote of the competitors, as a token of the respect the recipient earned from his or her competitors.

The event began with practice on Friday, which introduced the new visitors to our mild, shifty, and puffy winds. A photographer from the local newspaper showed up and a picture and announcement appeared in some editions on Saturday.

Skippers arrived Saturday to find the pond decorated with large banners courtesy of Carveth Kramer, a festive touch which has become a Rio Grande Cup tradition. Racing proceeded smoothly with clean starts and very few penalties in declining winds. A dinner was held at a local restaurant specializing in New Mexico cuisine.

Sunday saw even milder and more erratic winds, which challenged the competitors significantly. The day and the event wrapped up with lunch and the awards. Eric Rosenbaum continued his winning streak but was seriously challenged by Gary Boell. Next year should be interesting.

The Sportsmanship Trophy was won by Chandler Hill, who was also the youngest competitor, a fact that bodes well for our sport. Three commercial Dragon Force boats were entered. Richard Ball had the best finish of this group, followed by Allen Buzzell and Tony Solo.

The table below results gives the characteristics of the winning boats. Data for all boats, as well as a detailed breakdown of results, can be found at www.dcmyc.org.

Florida Cup Micro Magic Regatta
By Mike Rodeheaver

Eighteen Micro Magic skippers met at South County Regional Park in Punta Gorda Florida for the 2nd annual Florida Cup Micro Magic Regatta. Light winds from the SE at 2-3 kts prevailed prior to the start of the first race. RD Paul Newfield and Rear Commodore Art Hawes ( score keeper ) laid out a good course. After six races the wind built to around 4-5kts and the course was modified to include a new starting line and a longer course. It became apparent the skipper to beat was Jack Ward (Commodore of the Sun Coast Model Sailing Club); Jack had three bullets in the first five races. The morning races ended at noon and lunch was served. The good news was the wind held between 5-6 kts and made for a great sailing day. Conditions remained good throughout the afternoon with a nice breeze out of the SE at 5-6 kts. By 3:30 eighteen races were in the books and racing ended for the first day. Lowest raw score for the day was Jack Ward with 45 points followed by Jack Wubbe with 96 and Ron Stephanz with 101.

Dinner was at the Rivera Oyster Bar and Restaurant in Punta Gorda. A good number of skippers and their spouses enjoyed an evening of good food, drinks and of course sailing stories.

On Sunday morning the weather had turned to rain showers and no wind. After a short rain delay racing started with the wind picking up to 6-7 kts with overcast skies. The leaders from Saturday continued to dominate the course on Sunday. The 2nd place through 5th place skippers who were only 8 points apart ( raw score without throw outs ) on Saturday traded places several times during the Sunday morning races . By mid-morning the sun had returned along with the heat and humidity but the wind held. Racing continued until 12:30 with 10 more races in the books for a weekend total of 28 races.

Skippers started to pack up their boats and enjoy lunch as Art Hawes worked on the score board. No talking near the score keeper as Art was checking and rechecking the numbers ( there were 2 throw outs ). The RD, Paul Newfield, read off all scores starting with 18th place and working up to 6th place. The top 5 skippers were presented awards. See the results below for the top 10 places.

Martin Gray, Chairman of the Micro Magic Florida Cup, is working on the 2014 venue for the 3rd annual Florida Cup. It was previously decided that the date for this regatta would always be the third weekend of October.

October 19-20, 2013

The 2013 Annapolis EC12 Regatta is in the books after twenty four races were sailed. Fourteen EC12 Skippers descended on Warrington Farm Pond in Queenstown, MD to vie for the 2013 title. It took a little patience but after about an hour the wind decided that it would offer something that was sailable. Jamey Betz was hot out of the gate with a bullet the first race of the day and that is where he sits after thirteen races for day one, on top of the leader board. Five skippers managed a win during the day, Betz, Brawner, Freeland, Mote and Ramos each managed at least one win, they also make up the top five sailors at the end of the day.

Dave Ramos managed to defend his title from last year by winning three races and scoring nothing worse than a fifth on day two. The wind was shifty and up from yesterday. The top three that started the day remained the top three at the end of the day just in a different order with less than 5 points separating first thru third. Ramos, Brawner and Betz really distanced themselves from the rest of the fleet with strong performances over two days of sailing. With a win in the twenty third race Bill Ewing became the six skipper to add a win to his scorecard.

Thank you to everyone who assisted in the clean up. A huge thank you to RD Scott Graf, Spencer Graf and TR Lamb for their assistance in making this such a great regatta. John Eger provided us with a great floating dock that allowed us to have a stable dry launching area. Without the assistance of all the volunteers' events like this would never happen.

Top 3 were Dave Ramos, Dave Brawner, Jamey Betz.

October 12-13, 2013

The 26th annual Wisteria Cup on October 12th and 13th. The 14 skippers had conditions that were quite frustrating. Saturday morning began with a postponement while we waited for some wind to appear. When it did, the fleet was launched and made their way around a 1 ½ lap course, barely making a wake with their wind indicators spinning around in circles. As the day went on, it was Rick Gerry who inched out to the top of the leader board. With 11 races completed Saturday and the first throw out subtracted, it was Ricky with 34 points, Gerry Cobley with 36 and Rick West at 37 for the top three.
Sunday morning brought us some better winds but unfortunately it clocked around towards the north which is a bad direction for our lake. The big mover of the day was Alan Perkins who had four bullets, two seconds, a third, fourth and a seventh for the nine races sailed on Sunday. It still came down to the last race with son in law Rick Gerry sailing well but losing in the end by one point.
The Top 3 were Alan Perkins with 54 pts, Ricky Gerry with  55 and Danny Thomas with 72.
The Wisteria Cup Trophy, which is given to the skipper who completes all of the racing and finishes with the highest score, is good for a free entry to next year's regatta. This year the winner was Jerry Fernald.
A big thank you goes to Ron and Pauline Lacroix for the help running this event. Thank you skippers as well, for your behavior and making this a smooth event to run. Full Report, scores and photos on the EC12 Web site:
