The Rio Grande Cup began six years ago as a club regatta aimed at promoting the RG65 class within the Duke City Model Yacht Club, which was the first to adopt RG65s in the U.S. It gradually grew over the years to include skippers from adjacent states, and this year saw a jump in participation in both numbers and distances traveled to attend.
The cup itself is a trophy topped by a small item of Navajo silverwork. Additional trophies are awarded for second through fourth place. This was the first year that required a fleet or group scoring system. The Race Committee and Club officers chose a variation of odd/even scoring in which the groups were periodically reinitialized so that the top skippers met each other more often than by chance. Eleven races were scored with one discard. In addition, a Sportsmanship Trophy was awarded based on a vote of the competitors, as a token of the respect the recipient earned from his or her competitors.
The event began with practice on Friday, which introduced the new visitors to our mild, shifty, and puffy winds. A photographer from the local newspaper showed up and a picture and announcement appeared in some editions on Saturday.
Skippers arrived Saturday to find the pond decorated with large banners courtesy of Carveth Kramer, a festive touch which has become a Rio Grande Cup tradition. Racing proceeded smoothly with clean starts and very few penalties in declining winds. A dinner was held at a local restaurant specializing in New Mexico cuisine.
Sunday saw even milder and more erratic winds, which challenged the competitors significantly. The day and the event wrapped up with lunch and the awards. Eric Rosenbaum continued his winning streak but was seriously challenged by Gary Boell. Next year should be interesting.
The Sportsmanship Trophy was won by Chandler Hill, who was also the youngest competitor, a fact that bodes well for our sport. Three commercial Dragon Force boats were entered. Richard Ball had the best finish of this group, followed by Allen Buzzell and Tony Solo.
The table below results gives the characteristics of the winning boats. Data for all boats, as well as a detailed breakdown of results, can be found at www.dcmyc.org.
