2013 V-32 NCR by John Davis
Situated as a water feature for the large new Jordan Creek Mall, with a wide concrete walkway to the waters edge, our pond is a great venue. We have a first-rate Control Area, an extra-wide dock where launching and seeing what happens on a classic modified Olympic course makes for great racing. We enjoy varied conditions, with spring and late summer prevailing winds out of the south at 10-12 mph, often gusting to 20, and often very light air in July and early August.
The ideal wind direction on our pond is from the south, SSE, or SSW, and that is what we enjoyed this entire season, except for this V-32 NCR. On this September day, we started at 10 a.m. with the wind coming in from the SSW at 15-17, with gusts well past 20, which made for tough but fast-paced racing. At about 11 a.m. light rain softened the wind a bit, but then shortly after noon, everyone was shivering and wondering why. The temperature started in the mid 70s well past 11 a.m., but by noon it had dropped 20 degrees! Wet and cold, we broke for lunch. When we resumed racing about 1:30, the 0-20 wind started veering from SSW, to W, and then to NW, so we reversed the course, and had at it. Fortunately, the temperature had started warming, and when we finished racing at 3:45 p.m., the temperature was in the low 80s. Unfortunately, the west shifting wind funnels around and between the restaurant buildings lining the west side of the pond, created totally unpredictable currents of air interspersed with dead spaces. To quote Rob Hill following his hard earned third place finish: "You had many conditions I have never seen before. Wide and varied would be a serious understatement; it was a really humbling, challenging, learning experience to say the least."
The point spread for 16 races does not truly reflect the closeness of the racing. Because of the challenging wind conditions (especially in the afternoon) no race followed a predictable pattern, and the lead literally changed from leg to leg. It is a real testament to Charlie Rhinehart's skill and perseverance that he placed first in this NCR. By placing second in a class in which he had never before sailed, let alone handling the challenging conditions of the day, David Brawner's racing spoke for his skill. I doubt anyone involved would call this a fun regatta, but I guarantee everyone savored the unforgettably tough competition, and even tougher conditions. No matter your skill level (so long as you understand the primary RRS), no matter your model yacht class, travel to regattas and you will be a better skipper for the experience.

2013 Star 45 NCR By John Emery Photo by Don Peacock
Nineteen skippers attended the Star 45 national championship held in Dayton Ohio, October 4, 5, & 6. The Miami Valley Model Yacht Club organized the event. The event began on Friday October 4 with registration and the first seeding race, in very light wind. On Saturday the racing began in earnest. Our race committee of Ralph Kanko, Jerry Callahan, and Dave Eckard did a fantastic job keeping the racing moving in light wind. Using the progression / regression system they managed to complete six races (twelve heats) before the thunderclouds rolled in. At the end of the first day Dave Ramos had the lead with a number of skippers close on his heels. Sunday brought light rain, drizzle, and some very shifty light wind. We raced an additional six races, and the lead changes on almost every leg of the course. The final result was determined by two protests (DSQs could not be used as throw outs). In the end Dave Ramos retained his championship trophy by only one point. Stars from six states, as well as eight manufactures and five scratch built boats were represented. Mary Goebel won the Julie Airs trophy. The Julie Airs trophy is the trophy given to the most beautiful Star at the regatta by a vote of the skippers. The Fisher Manwaring trophy (the highest finishing scratch built boat) went to Robert Szczepansk. A special thanks to all the volunteers, from three different clubs in the Dayton area, which made the regatta possible. Watch for a soon to be released video of the event on You Tube. Usually Columbus Day Weekend is the Annual trek to San Antonio for the Battle at the Alamo Victoria Regatta! But it seems that every 5 years in the last 10 years it has become know as "THE SHOW" and for the 3rd time, the site of the 2013 Victoria Nationals!!! Folks have known of San Antonio being a Vacation of sorts which brought in Skippers this year as early as the Tuesday prior to the Regatta for a few days of site seeing in this beautiful city! While the Skippers were starting to arrive early that week the venue at Woodlawn Lake Park was already under construction with "Standing" Scaffolds and Circus Tents and more banners you have ever seen. This years "THE SHOW" was also benefiting the San Antonio FOOD BANK as a Charity event which brought it to another level also. On Saturday morning as Skippers began to arrive, they were greeted with High School Marching Bands, Music and more identical matching dressed Runners and Walkers for a 5K Charity Event in the park that morning also, so spectators were not in shortage for the Skippers. 10AM rolled up rather quick and as our host would not have it any other way, Skipper's Meeting had to start off with the traditional parade of State Flags and Introductions as part of the Opening Ceremonies. Representing 11 States were 41 Skippers officially in the show making this the largest Victoria Nationals on record in it's 15 year history. Using the Victoria Class National Ranking system, this was also a record field of over 92% of the Top Skippers in attendance here this weekend. Never has there been a field of Skippers/Victoria Tallent assembled in one place before. With 3 past National Champions and 19 of the top 21 Ranking Skipper's attended, this was going to be one tough "A-Fleet".
With the forecast stating that we would have rain sometime through the weekend, we were all hoping the weather people would be wrong! Beautiful sunshine and light to medium winds were the call for Friday and Saturday. Eric Gregory, the Race Director, did a great job with the courses as the day went on! As much fun as this event was slated and advertised to be, there was also a level of seriousness brought to this event by the Top Skippers. Every aspect of this event ran on time , even the usual Pirates of Woodlawn lunch served to the minute on time after a Masterful BBQ PitMaster had been smoking the 100lbs of Texas Brisket for over 12 hours. Again....no one goes home hungry from Woodlawn for 2 days! Do I need to mention the Saturday Evening's Mexican feast at a local spot complete with Free Tequila shots waiting for the skippers after arriving in there private shuttle bus from the Host Hotel to Dinner called the "Margarita Express". Should I mention one of the highest valued Raffle that night with no less than 3 full kit boats, Radios, and 7 sets of sails to be given out!? Read details on the Club's website!!!
Brig North, of Dallas,Texas, came down to San Antonio on a mission to have the most fun, and WIN!. Chris Macaluso's mission was to defend his title of Defending 2012 Champion. Ron Stephanz and Andrew Fox just wanted to regain a Nationals title once again, and Hew Hamilton just wanted to pay tribute to America's Cup winner Team Oracle USA with his special painted "winged" Victoria sails! And who would thought that Al Ross's brand new boat was such a Cajun Gator on steroids with speed! All these skippers were in the hunt for the 2013 Victoria National's title after Saturday's results were posted! I have to mention Bill Woollens and Phil Wright who traveled the farthest from Anchorage, AK just for the food and fun!

RC Laser Ft. Stoakes Cannonball River Race a Huge Success
by Nick Mortgu
Several months ago the clever team of Harry Henkel and Roger Baldwin, from the Oxford RC Laser Fleet, got together over a couple of lemonades and came up with the idea of an RC LASER river race on a portion of the Tred Avon River in Easton, MD. That was some lemonade meeting as this event was spectacular from beginning to end. The Ft. Stoakes Cannonball River Race was held October 12, 2013 from the headwaters of the Tred Avon River with the Baldwin family compound as the headquarters for all the festivities. The essence of a long distance race is that each RC skipper has a much needed partner operating a launch craft of

any type while deftly maneuvering the launch around and away from other competitors craft both large and small. The team of Dave Branning and Elaine Hepkin won the 4 mile race in a slightly damp day over 10 other competitive teams. For a complete detailed report on the event and all the festivities that complimented the day go to www.rclaserna.com.

RC Laser Hot Dog Regatta and Region 3 Championship 2013 - Raleigh, NC. by Nick Mortgu
Triangle Model Yacht Club and RC Laser Fleet 27 hosted the third annual Hot Dog Regatta on Oct. 5, 2013, at its usual venue on Lake Crabtree. 13 skippers participated in 10 races. 12 were local club members, and RC Laser North American class secretary Dave Branning came from Tilghman, MD.
 | Winner - Tom Rummage |
With the exception of a few puffs (one could count them on the fingers of one hand), winds were mostly zero gusting to 1 or 2 mph, unusual for this location at this time of year. The wind (when there was some) direction shifted throughout the day, challenging the race director to set courses. By mid-afternoon it settled mostly to the south, making for a less than ideal start area and a distant windward mark, testing not only skippers' light air skills but also their patience.
Tom Rummage, David Branning, Gerry Cobley and Carl Olbrich persevered and dominated the top finishing positions all day, demonstrating they weren't just lucky; well done, men. Tom is the Top Dog again, and last place John Foust received a copy of Dr. Stuart Walker's "The Tactics of Small Boat Racing." Engraved glasses were also awarded to the top three finishers at a hot dog cookout after the races. Several skippers sailing in their first RC Laser regatta performed very well under the circumstances. TMYC has the makings of a solid fleet and we hope to see some RC Laser action in the surrounding states in the near future - this is a regional regatta, and we hope to see some more guys from the southeast.
