The 2013 Soling 1 Meter Region IV Regional Championship Regatta
Mike Wyatt and Jerry Callahan
The RC Sailing Club of Cincinnati (RCSCC) AMYA # 217 hosted the 2013 AMYA Region IV Regional Championship Regatta on Saturday and Sunday, September 21- 22, at Voice of America Park, in Westchester, OH. VOA Park is the highest point in Ohio which means clear air and (many times)- winds of 18+ for the fall regatta here.
Weather for the weekend was great- after Saturday morning's early clouds and light rain cleared we had beautiful, partly-cloudy weather and winds 12- 14 from the WNW. On Sunday, winds lightened somewhat, to 6 -10, with cooler temperatures and clear skies. The wind direction Sunday posed a challenge- as it came from the North, meaning the courses had to be set more away from shore, and no opportunity for long windward legs.
RD Brian Callahan did a great job all weekend, and kept the event moving. Although "holds" were not permitted to be requested by competitors, the RD allowed plenty of time for boats to be tuned or repaired and generally ran great races for us - taking our suggestions so that we had FUN and challenging races. For Saturday, he had us sailing long "X"-shaped courses that started with a broad reach followed by a windward leg, a run and a final beat to the finish. On Sunday- we sailed a "W" course, with three short beats, but as the wind lightened the course had to shorted to a "figure 8" with two windward legs.
Although only 13 sailors made the regatta, the fleet had a LOT of good sailors including 2012 Region IV Champion Marc Smith, plus 2011 Regional Champion Jerry Callahan, and local heroes Bob Bottenhorn, Rob ("Guitar Man") Hill, and ("The Perfessor") Russ Hardie.
 | In the front row, L to R, are Bob Bottenhorn, Rob Hill and Russ Hardie In the back row, L to R, are John McKinney, Mike Wyatt and Jim Donahoe |
After completing 18 Heats on Saturday, Bob Bottenhorn had a comfortable 10 point edge. But, on Sunday it was all Rob Hill as he counted all 1s, 2s and 3s to close the gap - almost, but not quite. After all 25 Heats, and 4 discards, Cincinnati's Bob Bottenhorn won the regatta by just 4 points over Rob Hill. In third was Russ Hardie, 6 points behind Hill, then Marc Smith in 4th place. Bottenhorn's win came on the strength of 8 wins, backed up with 4 seconds. Hill placed second with only 4 wins- but also had 4 seconds, and 6 thirds after all 4 discards. Russ Hardie won 3 Heats to finish 3rd. Consistency and most 2nds and 3rds generally win closely fought regattas. 2012 R4 Champion, Marc Smith placed fourth with 6 wins, and 2011 Champion Jerry Callahan placed 5th.
The regatta featured a "Silver Fleet"- where the lower half of the group competes for trophies:
Silver Fleet trophies were handed out to John McKinney, 1st, Mike Wyatt, 2nd, and Jim Donahoe, 3rd
Thanks to Victor Model Products, who supplied a Soling 1 Meter Kit, raffled off to offset regatta expenses- Marc Smith won the Kit. Congratulations to all for a fine regatta!

Infinity 54 NCR
Class: Infinity 54
Date: August 23, 24 and 25
Host Club: San Francisco Model YC
Venue: Spreckles Lake, Golden Gate Park
Entries: 8
Winds: Light to blustery.
Races Completed: 20 (3 throw outs.
Scoring System: Low point.
RC: John H. Super (RD), Jeff Brooks (Scorer)
A short Report about a small Regetta. Eight boats were entered, 7 showed up to race and 5 finished the regatta. Practice was on Friday and the NCR racing took place on Saturday and Sunday. The wind was from most points of the compass and blew 2 to 15 knots. A usual day on the newly repaired Spreckles Lake. All but one entrant were from the SFMYC and all were out of shape for the 4+ miles of walking while controlling their craft. The SF Park and Recreation Dept. had drained our Lake for repairs and re-filled it just days before the racing so our sailors were not used to the grueling workout. Near the end of the first day several people remarked to the RD that racing could end at any time the RD wanted...hint, hint, we are beat.
Some highlights: Rich Styles (#13), the SFMYC Master Boat Mechanic, was dismasted twice. Jim Hensel (#80) started the racing by having his boat go free sailing. It sailed across the pond, he ran around to get it but it sailed back to the start area on it's own. He forgot to turn on the battery. Jerry Turney (#77) won race #1 by sailing the correct course. He was in last place but was the only person to sail the leeward end of the 2 lap race correctly. Six DSQ'd and Jerry won.
Jason Spiller sailed a pretty much flawless regatta with 14 bullets. He did get 8 in the first race since he led the pack around the wrong course. Spiller also sails an ODOM, a Santa Barbara, an RX as well as the Infinity. The crafty sailor sailed 505 dinghys in an earlier life.
For excitement we had a RC Seaplane do a kamikaze dive barley missing 2 Infinitys. It came within feet of both the boats and the racers. Wrecked the plane.
Off the water we had lunch provided by the galley crew from SFMYC and the people from the America's Cup had a tent set up and were promoting the AC. They gave red hats with the AC logo emblazoned on the front to all the people involved in the regatta. They also gave some great bling to the winner and first and second also rans.
Good fun was had by all, trophies were awarded as well as chevrons and champagne and cake rounded out the event.

2013 Santa Barbara NCR John H. Super
The 2013 Santa Barbara National Championship regatta was held on September 10th and 11th at beautiful Spreckels Lake, in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The event was hosted by the San Francisco Model Yacht Club, and 22 boats were entered, with skippers coming from as far away as New Jersey. It was the largest S/B regatta in recent memory. The fleet was divided into two parts, with odd-even finishes determining who sailed the next heat. Fifteen races were sailed, and at the end, only one point apiece separated first from third. Ken Campbell won with 24 points, SFMYC's own Ryan Schofield was second with 25 points, and David Ramos came in third with 26 points.
 | 2013 Santa Barbara Nationals |
Tuesday the 10th began with breakfast in the clubhouse, then the skippers got the day's sailing instructions from Race Director John Super. The course was windward-leeward. with the two buoys at each end sometimes rounded to port, and sometimes used as a gate. As SFMYC sailors know, Spreckels Lake can be quite an adventure to sail on, and the lake did not disappoint. Winds were predicted as 10 to 20 mph, from the South to Southwest, but there were gusts exceeding 30 mph at times, which put the rails under for the fleet as skippers tried to control their yachts. There were 3 dismasted boats, a couple of jib racks were torn from the hulls, one main boom broke, and numerous sheet lines parted. On the downwind legs, spectators and competitors were treated to the rare sight of hydroplaning Santa Barbaras! At the end of the day, four skippers, Dave Ramos, David Brawner, Ken Campbell, and Ryan Schofield, had three bullets each. Dinner that evening was at Westlake Joe's, a popular local restaurant.
Wednesday's weather forecast called for lighter winds, from 10 to 15 mph, still from the South to Southwest, but sometimes shifting to West. All the boats were successfully repaired from the previous day, and the fleet took to the water again at 11:00 AM. Today gave the racers another treat of sailing Spreckels lake, which we called being "Spreckeled". That's when you're sailing along nicely, and suddenly your boat stops dead in the water, no wind, as other boats only 10 feet from you sail merrily by. At the end of the day. Ken Campbell and Ryan Schofield had three wins each.
An awards ceremony followed in the SFMYC's clubhouse adjacent to the lake which featured champagne toasts and cake for everyone. First, second and third trophies were awarded to Ken, Ryan, and David. The SFMYC continued a tradition established by the San Diego Argonauts, by awarding trophies by age group. The Masters Award, for ages 60-64, went to Ken Campbell, the Grand Masters Award for ages 65-69 went to Steve Vaczovsky, and the Grand Masters Award went to SFMYC sailor Michael Fischer. Age can have its rewards. Certificates and S/B NCR caps were also given to all participants.
In 2012, the AMYA established the Rich Matt Santa Barbara Perpetual Trophy to honor Rich, who had done so much for the AMYA and the Santa Barbara class, and this award was also presented to Ken Campbell. Representatives of the Americas Cup, the "other race" going on in San Francisco, were also on hand, and gave prizes to our winners of all six awards. The San Francisco Model Yacht Club also wishes to thank our dedicated corps of volunteer scorers, observers, course judges and support personnel who made our regatta such an outstanding success. It was an event that will long be remembered.

RC Laser Rock Hall, MD Regatta By Tom Lippincott
The 2nd annual Rock Hall R/C Laser Regatta took place in impressive fashion. Under clear blue skies 11 sailors from four fleets converged on Lawyers Cove off the Chester River to sail in a challenging northerly. Varied wind conditions kept everyone on their toes, with plenty of sail changes a few races saw A's and B's on the course at the same time. Regatta chairman Chip Lieber and race managers Joe and Amy Manley did a fine job keeping the day flowing, managing to get in 14 races.
Don Barker of Oxfords RC Laser fleet won the day with consistent sailing managing 7 first and finished 3 points ahead of Jersey Boy Rob Seidelmann who won three races. Hank Buchanan from NY, NY won one race and took third. Other race winners were Jim Flack 2 first and Dave Branning with one win.
We welcomed newcomers John Wagner and junior sailor David Manley both sailing in their first regattas, David took home the junior trophy.
Other regatta notes;
Dave Branning finally found his hat, no one stepped on the snake, and lots of racing.... all in all a great day!

Mike Therrien's name will be added to our club's championship trophy cup, awarded annually. This trophy was donated by Manny Costa and started in the year 1976 and won by Jerry Trahan. That was 37 years ago. As a matter of interest, the Therriens make their own sails.
