Model Sailing in the News

Sail the Park - Fun Sailing Event
Hagerstown, MD

null Sail the Park is the result of local RC sailors working with the local community and government to introduce RC sailing to them. They created a day for the public to come out to experience and see RC sailing first hand. They also did a great job of getting the local news media involved. Below are links to the local news coverage they enjoyed.

Mystic Seaport - Mystic, CT August 10-11, 2013

Forecast for Saturday was for NNW 0-5kts. Well, it did that. 22 boats registered for this regatta and that is a very good turn out and possibly a sign of the economy turning around. As a result, we elected to split the fleet which turned out to be a good choice. Racing got underway with a single non-scored seeding race. This allowed folks to shake out the webs, have a look at how their boats stacked up and make any last minute changes.

Right out of the gate, it was clear that Jamie Betz had his boat dialed in for the conditions posting two bullets as he climbed from B into A in the seeding heat.

As the day wore on, the SW appeared and then withdrew while the NW seemed to hold its ground but not without causing fits to the RC trying to keep the course fair. DB commented to the skippers, "at some point during the race, the course will be fair". Finally after lunch, the SW crept in and the course was finally settled. As the leaders began to emerge, the point spread between first and fourth were very close. Ramos, Dion, Betz and Leo were all in the first pelleton and stretching their lead on the pack.

Sunday the SW filled in sooner and the breeze was outstanding for the balance of the day. The fleet shrunk to 17 boats and was merged into one. As a result, we were able to get 10 more races in before the hard stop at 2pm.

MMYC Held a very successful CR-914 Nationals at Redd's August 24th - 25th. Twenty skippers rounded the marks for two days in light air.

Alex Ramos of Stevensville, Maryland was hot out of the gates, and never looked back in route to his NCR win.  Second place went to our own Kevin Dooley- Longtime CR-914 skipper.  And newcomer Brian Yanofsky continues to impress with a 4th place finish.  Infact- 3 of the top 5 finisher's in the year's NCR went to MMYC!   Even more impressive is the quantity and quality of skippers that we rolled-out to round-out the twenty boat fleet.  Awesome job from the 914 Fleet!

Dave Branning

Day One (September 6, 2013) at the Tilghman Regatta was completed for the J Class with six skippers competing under bright blue skies and fresh breezes. By the time we all got splashed the breeze and chop died down and we had 12 windward leeward courses with a break for lunch. Jack Wubbe, from Naples, FL, had seven firsts and 5 seconds to take the regatta handily by 12 points. Skip Hall sailed his new Shamrock for the first time (Bill Ewing sailed it in Mystic) and cobbled together a nice second place, sailing 9 races himself. Dave Branning, who never got to get his own Ranger going, sailed two bullets for Skip and Victor Oberg, under duress, sailed it for a third in race 11. So it was a team regatta second for Skip's Shamrock. Danny Thomas missed three races but finished two points behind Skip for third place.

Thanks to Don Barker, Clare Barker, Elaine Hepkin, John Tochko and Jim Flach who did all the hard work of Race Committee, Chase boat, Lunch Crew and launch team.

Please see the photo link above.

CLASS NEWS/ANNOUNCEMENTS

null There's Something About Hospitality

October 2013 Model Yacht Fleet - Mainsheet Article- San Diego Yacht Club

by Dr. David Ryan

There's something gratifying and fulfilling about extending the "hand" of hospitality to ones guests, as a gesture of friendship and good will. As so many traditional invitations begin with the words, "The honor of your presence is requested..., there is something beyond implied obligation or a self-imposed commitment to satisfying guests' expectations. It really comes down to validation of established relationships, welcoming new opportunities for interaction, and a sense of deliberate intent to make meaningful lasting connections, on a personal level, with as many guests as possible.

It is with this welcoming spirit that the SDYC Model Yacht Fleet hosted the 2013 Star World Championship Model Yacht Invitational Regatta on August 30th. Back in January, during the organizational meeting to establish our racing calendar for this year, 2012 CR-914 (model yacht) National Champion, George Szabo, suggested that we host the International Star Class participants in an exhibition style, model yacht regatta on the eve of the 2013 Star Worlds commencement. Soling 50 & Wheeler Nationals - Postponded
Ron Saxon

Logo Soling one Meter We are postponing both the Soling 50 & Wheeler Nationals.

Thursday afternoon we got a call from the Monterey Parks and Rec Dept. They informed us that a faulty valve has resulted in an 18" drop in water level. We went to the pond Friday morning to assess the situation. It appears that the pond, which is normally a very nice venue for regattas, will not be suitable for either the Wheeler or Soling classes. Our four day event included the Nationals for both classes. We then scrambled to find another venue close by, but we were not successful. Our home pond - Pinto Lake in Watsonville, is also not suitable due to low water levels (lack of rain this year).

We have consulted with both Class Secretaries. The final decision is to cancel our current plans and reschedule. Our tentative target date would be in the October/November timeframe. That will depend on how soon the Parks and Rec Dept. can make the necessary repairs and restore the water level. We will send an update in September.

If you mailed your entry with a check, your check will be mailed back to you in the next few days. If you registered through the AMYA site and paid via PayPal, you can choose a refund through Paypal, or we can mail you a check. Please advise which option you prefer.

Due to the short notice, I am concerned about being sure everyone receives this information. If you don't mind e-mailing me back to confirm that you received this information, it would be appreciated. Otherwise I will be trying to reach all entrants by phone. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this causes you. We were looking forward to this event and we are disappointed too.

Best regards,
Ron Saxon
