2013 Full Cup Vintage M Regatta by John Snow Marblehead Model Yacht Club held its 18th annual "Bill Full" Cup Vintage Marblehead (VM) Regatta on Saturday, June 8, at historic Redd's Pond in Marblehead, Massachusetts. The regatta is also part of club's 2013 VM racing series. There were nine competitors with two from New Hampshire. Overnight rains had subsided allowing for ideal sunny conditions, low 80s temps and little humidity. As such, we used single fleet and once-around legs with an offset. A total of 14 heats were run under a steady SW breeze. John Snow was the Regatta Director assisted by Duane Marshall as the Scorekeeper.

There were six 1946-1970 High Flyer (HF) and three 1930-1945 Traditional (TR) VM boats with award plaques for the "top two" skippers in each design category using AMYA low-point scoring. Top TR VM skipper was also awarded Full Cup as perpetual trophy is it is rotated between the HF and TR designs yearly. Results had John Skerry winning in the HF fleet with 1960s Magic Dragon follow by Stan Goodwin with Warrior II and Biff Martin with UK 1960s era VM models. Their points tie was broken in Stan's favor given a greater number of second places. John Storrow was the top TR skipper with his 1935 Madcap followed by Alain Jousse with his restored 1938 Cherrio II. Number of firsts by skipper are noted in ( ).

Tilghman Regatta by Nick Mortgu
Location: Tilghman Island, MD
This year's RC Laser Tilghman Island Regatta was sailed in light winds and waves produced by Harrison's head boats coming in after a day of fishing. The boats and skippers handled these challenges with ease. Last year's winner, Don Barker defended his reign as champion.
The fleet of seventeen sailed together on a course of two long laps. The morning started with light winds out of the west with light rain at times. This proved to be no problem for this group of experienced RC Laser sailors. The Jersey boys, Oxford, MD group and the guys from NC have all been sailing together for some time and sailed as friendly a regatta as possible, with good clean starts and polite mark roundings. Strange but true!
By lunch break with five races sailed the top three sailors emerged; Jim Karr in the lead, followed closely by Don Barker, then Dave Brawner. Lunch was provided by the Oxford fleet and served on the upper deck of "Tilghman on the Chesapeake Club". A well deserved break with a spectacular view!

By the start of the afternoon racing the wind had switched to the predicted southerly direction. Don Barker and Dave Branning ruled the afternoon races, moving Dave up in the standings.
The last race of the day was sailed in a dying breeze with light zephyrs filling in to move boats forward an inch at a time. RC Laser class secretary Nick Mortgu stopped three feet from the finish line and sat there for what seemed like an hour. North American RC Laser class Secretary Dave Branning caught up and then sat six feet from the finish line. Bets were being made on the sidelines as to who would finish first. To keep it short Nick won that race and Dave finished second in the regatta.
Six different skippers won races in this regatta. The one throw-out put Brawner and Karr in a tie for fourth place.
Thanks to RD Peter Bruns for a great job, The NC guys, Rick Ferguson and Tom Rummage who drove north in one of the season's worst storms, and Tammy Brunker who sailed her first away regatta.

2013 Triangle Cup Regatta by Bob Szczepanski
Summary of the Triangle Cup Regatta
Class: EC12
Date: June 1 - 2
Location: Lake Crabtree County Park, Raleigh, NC
Host Club: Triangle Model Yacht Club
Number of entries: 19
Winds: Saturday 8 - 12 mph with higher gusts. Sunday 10 - 15 mph with higher gusts.
Races Completed: 16 including one non-scored seeding race.
Scoring System: Low point with two throw outs.
Regatta Committee and valuable assistants: Bob Szczepanski - RD, Gerry Cobley - Race Chairman, Karen Szczepanski - Scorer, Jock and Mickey Gault, Dan Stompka - Assistants.
The 12th annual EC12 Triangle Cup Regatta (June 1 & 2) was contested by nineteen skippers. The fleet was split according to the EC12 Skipper Rankings and the B fleet skippers hit the starting line promptly at 9:30 AM. The top four finishers were promoted to A fleet.
Winds were top of the A rig range and the long windward/leeward course made for some exciting sailing going around 2 ½ times. Broaches, round ups and the classic EC12 downwind "rock and roll" challenged all. Four skippers separated themselves from the rest of the fleet and the competition became intense among them. After five races, only four points separated David Linville, Gerry Cobley, Carl Olbrich and Scott Vernon respectively. After ten races, David Linville's consistent sailing was challenged by Carl Olbrich's outstanding boat speed, followed by Scott Vernon and then Gerry Cobley comprising the top four. The point spread now grew to 14.

On Sunday, the winds increased to the point where the entire fleet switched to B rigsbefore the start of the first race. There was little doubt about the rig change evidenced by the whitecaps and wind streaks on Lake Crabtree. Gerry Cobley got every one's attention with sparkling boat speed and first place finishes in the first four races of the day. Carl Olbrich, also demonstrating superb boat speed, was not far behind on each of those races. The leaders were now Carl Olbrich, Gerry Cobley and David Linville separated by only three points, followed by Scott Vernon whom was only 11 points off the lead. The excitement and tension was evident. While Carl and Gerry dueled, David nailed the start, got to the windward mark first and led the fleet to a first place finish on the final race. Carl aggressively pushed an inshore tack and ran aground allowing Gerry to finish ahead of him. Scott ran afoul at the start and was unable to recover.
After two throw outs, Carl and Gerry were tied for first with 37 points each. David ended up in third with 39 points. Gerry's 1st in the first race and his string of 1st places on Sunday dominated all for a convincing tie break. As a final punctuation to how tight the racing was, it was noted that David Linville actually finished two points ahead of both Carl and Gerry before the throw outs - whew, whatta regatta!
Thanks to all skippers, to Karen Szczepanski for scoring, Jock and Mickey Gault and Dan Stompka for food, water, photos and general assistance.

Victoria RAMYA T-Shirt Regatta Walt Bankes
This one day regatta is the first hosted by the Rochester (NY) Area Model Yachting Assn. in over six years. The weather was very good and it was challenging since the winds were high and shifty.
Out of 14 entrants there were seven left after the tenth race. Lots of wet electronics and other breakdowns were prevalent. All the Canadians proved to be tough! Four out of four still standing at the end of the day. Originally intended to be a regatta for both Victoria sub-fleets (Gold and Silver) all boats raced in one fleet since only one Silver Vic preregistered. Looks like the concept of the Silver fleet being a traveling fleet may not be attainable.
Gusty wind caused innumerable 360 degree turns that were not penalty turns. After one big gust I could be seen chasing after a 10 x 10 foot canopy that was pretending to be a tumbleweed - lucky it was headed away from the lake.
The hands down winner of the T-Shirt (see photo) was Bob Szczepanski with a score of 25. Jay Niggli and Walter House slugged it out for second place but Walter got snookered into third place since the drop scores were distributed with one in the morning and one in the afternoon. And all four Canadians grabbed fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh.
The day was ended with the chevron and T-shirt presentation AND a drawing of door prizes donated by Leading Edge Hobbies of Ontario, Canada. The camaraderie was wonderful. I don't think I heard a "discouraging word" all day.
Many thanks to: Jim Child for stepping forward to take the RD responsibility from me, Anne Foust for manning the score sheet and starting timer, Doug Hemingway and Jim McMahon for providing all the other support for the RD, Jay Niggli for measuring and lots of other tasks. Beth Vanfossen for arranging breakfast, and Nan Schaller for lunch support.

2013 Atlanta Red, White and Blue Regatta
July 14, 2013
By John Muhlhausen
The EC12 Meter Fleet of the Atlanta Yacht Club hosted its second annual Red White Blue Regatta Sunday July 14 on Lake Allatoona. In contrast to last year when the water was smooth, the wind non-existent, and the temperatures searing, this year's event greeted the 10 skippers participating with lumpy water, a reasonably steady 6 mph easterly breeze with gusts to19, and low 80-degree temperatures for July. Thanks to Scott Vernon who brought several loaner boats so that Gary Jones from St. Louis and Bob Jones, a recent Marietta transplant from Boston, were able to sail with us.
Race director, Ian Elliott, set a two lap windward leeward course with a mid-leg start finish line, and a gate as the leeward mark. Initially some were confused by the gate, however, it worked well as the competitors split evenly on subsequent beats with

some choosing the flatter less windy conditions on the right and others going for it all on the left. The windward mark was problematic during gusts with many screaming in on port, only to meet a parade of starboard tackers on the starboard layline. Thanks to the bow bumpers we all use in Atlanta, which should be mandatory for the Class, there was no serious damage. The strong winds eventually took their toll, and the initial fleet of 10 diminished to 5 for the last six races. A total of eighteen races were sailed and at the end, David Linville from Peachtree City was the clear winner with a total of 23 points. David was followed by Gary Jones with 46 points and Jack Shepard with 53 points. Rounding out the top five were Charles Ellis and Scott Vernon. Racing concluded at 3 pm with a trophy presentation, beer and snacks.
Thanks go to Ian Elliott, who did a masterful job as RD, Rita Fullick, who recorded scores and coordinated breakfast snacks, drinks and lunch with help from Lisa Elliott and Kitza Muhlhausen, Orren Williams from our local Snipe Fleet, who set the marks and was kept busy rescuing disabled boats, and John Muhlhausen, who served as regatta chair. |
RULES Q&A
Question When a boat has gained a significant advantage in a race or heat after taking a One - Turn Penalty in accordance with rule 44.2, will a single additional One - Turn Penalty under rule E4.3(b) exonerate the boat irrespective of the 'size' of the advantage gained?
