Green Mountain Regatta By:Charlie Berry Editor: Tom Phillips
Class: EC12 Meter
Stowe Yacht Club and The Commodores Inn held this annual event on the pond behind the Inn, in Stowe, Vermont, on June 1st and 2nd, 2013. The regatta is part of the New England Cup Championship Series and it was also the Region 1 Championship. There were 21 competitors, including two from Nova Scotia. We broke out of the mold this year: moderate SW winds both days, with strong, shifty gusts tossed in just to make things interesting. In fact, the same basic course was set and used for the entire series. Yes, in Stowe! With 21 boats, we used the EORS two-fleet system, moving four boats up and down. With the favorable conditions, we elected to run longer 2 leg races. A total of 12 races (24 heats) were run over the two days. With temps in the high 80's, and humidity to match, we fit in as many races as the competitors and the RC could reasonably handle. | L to R: David Brawner 1st, Chuck Luscomb 2nd Jim Goddard 3rd, Al Dion 4th, Bob Greer 5th |
Dave Brawner and Chuck Luscomb had a virtual match race series within a series. Very close races between these two the entire weekend. After Saturday, Brawner led Luscomb by 4 points. On Sunday, Brawner increased his margin by 4 more points. However, the individual races were often extremely close between these two top sailors. At the awards presentation, Mike Martin requested that this regatta honor the memory of Rich Matt. The loud applause gave the confirmation! Be sure to see the 12 Discussion site for more.

Triangle Cup Regatta
By Bob Szczepanski
Editor:Tom Phillips
The 12th annual EC12 Triangle Cup Regatta (June 1 & 2,2013) was one of the best and most highly contested.. The 19 boat fleet was split according to the EC12 Skipper Rankings and the B fleet skippers hit the starting line promptly at 9:30 AM. The top four finishers were promoted to A fleet.
Winds were top of the A rig range and the long windward/leeward course made for some exciting sailing going around 2 times. After ten races, David Linville's consistent sailing was challenged by Carl Olbrich's outstanding boat speed, followed by Scott Vernon and then Gerry Cobley comprising the top four with the point spread of 14.
| L to R, Standing: David Linville 3rd, Carl Olbrich 2nd, Gerry Cobley 1st, Bob Szczpanski RD; Kneeling, Scott Vernon 4th, Dick Proceus 5th. |
The high winds and inevitable collisions diminished the fleet by several boats. On Sunday, the winds increased to the point where the entire fleet switched to B rigs (if they had them) before the start of the first race. After two throw outs, Carl and Gerry were tied for first with 37 points each. David ended up in third with 39 points. David Linville actually finished two points ahead of both Carl and Gerry before the throw outs -- whew, whatta regatta!
Thanks to all skippers, to Karen Szczepanski for scoring, Jock and Mickey Gault and Dan Stomka for food, water, photos and general assistance.
