R/C Sailboat racing is a great sport and lots of fun!!! It is even better when you can race have fun and raise money for a cause like Cure Cancer!!! Wednesday March 27th Sun Coast Model Sailing Club hoisted just such an event.

Last year (2012) club member Mike Rodeheaver and his wife Kathy approached the club and asked if they and their, what is now known as "Sail For Cancer" team could run a regatta on one of our club sailing days raise money for "The Cure".

Their first effort was great and this year it got even better 24 boats hit the starting line under ideal sailing conditions and completed 10 races just in time for a homemade lunch prepared by the "team". The team also consists of their neighbors Gayle and Linda Morris. The reward $815.00.

First place went to Al Dion; 2nd Bill Uhl; 3rd Jack Ward; 4th Gib Loesel & 5th Jack Burwell

"Old Friends and New Friends Meet for 24 Races"
By Dick Hedderick

Orlando EC 12 Regatta March 23/24, 2013

The Orlando Regatta, held March 23 & 24, 2013, was the fourth stop on the winter circuit of the Florida EC-12 Association. The regatta was hosted by the Orlando Model Yacht Club at the Sailing Site of The Sunday Sloopers Model Yacht Club. Three new skippers, Ruben Caseres, Doug Cepuran and Richard Sbordone of South Daytona Model Yacht club participated as well as Jim Kelly from The Villages. Great to see new skippers and new boats participating.

The winds were "A" rig conditions Saturday morning, but increased to "B" rig levels for the afternoon. Sunday was "B" rig conditions from 9:30 AM until noon. With 14 boats registered, RD Daryl Krasoski was able to start a single fleet Saturday morning. A two lap course was set up with a start line very close to shore. After 18 races on Saturday, Alan Perkins was leading, with Bob Greer, Dick Hedderick, Tom Phillips, and Martin Gray rounding out the top 5.

Racing on Sunday got under way with light "B" rig conditions, but then increased toward noon. Winds of 25+ mph were forecasted, but did not materialize. After 8 more races and winds increasing, RD Daryl Krasoski called a skippers meeting. Due to an approaching front, Daryl recommended that racing end as of 11:30 AM. No skippers objected, having now raced 24 races in two days.

Alan Perkins held his lead on Sunday. Bob Greer and Dick Hedderick alternated for second place. In the end, Bob secured second place by 1 point.

EC 12 Regional Championship/Gone with the Wind Regatta
Submitted by John Muhlhausen, regatta chair

April 12-14, 2013

Twenty-six skippers attended the EC12 Meter Class Regional 3A Championship/Gone with the Wind Regatta April 12-14 organized by AMYC 47. It was the second radio controlled sailing event hosted at the Atlanta Yacht Club over the past several years and the first regatta using AYC's new clubhouse. Hosting this regatta was a major effort by our small EC12 fleet that was made possible by many AYC club members from other fleets, who assisted us by opening up their cabins to our guests and making them available gratis, helped serve meals, sighted the start and finish lines, and rescued boats that had become disabled and removed trees that floated into the race course.

The event began Friday evening with a complimentary happy hour followed by a wonderful dinner provided by local EC12 skipper, Rita Fullick. Saturday morning dawned to cool clear conditions with a building NW breeze gusting upwards to18 knots and churning up the lake into streaks of white. Skippering a R/C boat on Lake Allatoona with its large open spaces and waves provide challenging conditions for R/C skippers who are not use to sailing in such conditions. Those who had their "B" rigs up were able to navigate relatively well even though at times their hulls appeared to wipe out downwind beneath the water's surface only to suddenly reappear surfing on a wave. There were some entanglements, dismasting and equipment failures. However, these mishaps were quickly repaired by many helping hands during the lunch break. The winds settled down substantially during the afternoon calling for the "A" rigs and another 3 races were completed by our legendary RD, Skip Allen. At the end of the day the skippers enjoyed another complimentary happy hour at AYC's lakeside viewing pavilion, while rigged boats were transported by trailer and stored the clubhouse for the evening.

Due to consistent sailing after the first six races without finishing below 4th, Baron Bremer had amassed a total of 13 points and enjoyed a nine-point lead over Reichard Kahle. Alan Perkins was safely in 3rd with 31 points. Saturday night a Georgia style BBQ dinner was catered for sailors at the clubhouse.

The winds had shifted to the east and were a steady 6 knots under an overcast and chilly Sunday morning. Baron and Reichard dueled it out all day and gradually Reichard ate away at Baron's Saturday night's lead. After a dropped race was calculated in, Reichard won his second consecutive Regional 3A Championship by ONE POINT again. Before the regatta began all skippers were given an opportunity to predict the top five finishers and the order of their finishes. The prize was a bottle of Mount Gay rum. The top five finishers were Reichard Kahle, Baron Bremer, Alan Perkins, Rick West and Bob Greer . . . and the winning prediction submitted by Baron was . . . Baron, 1st; Reichard, 2nd, Alan, 3rd; Rick, 3rd (Rick Gerry), and Bob, 5th. Baron is not only an outstanding sailor - he is also a pretty shrewd forecaster. We may want to ask him what will the stock market do next month!

We at the Atlanta Model Yacht Club enjoyed having all the hot shots come and show us how it is done. Thanks to Skip Allen for his fine RD work and to Scott Vernon for managing the scores. We look forward to crossing tacks with you again.

The Shamrock Regatta
By Nick Mortgu

Laser Class - Riverton, NJ

This year's RC Laser Shamrock Regatta was held at Riverton Yacht Club in April rather Cooper River Yacht Club in March on St Paddy's Day weekend. West Jersey Laser Fleet is made up of members of both yacht clubs and is lucky enough to have use of both facilities. Sailing at RYC on the tidal Delaware River proved to be a challenge to all seventeen skippers. The wind direction and velocity were the biggest challenge. C sails were used by most skippers with some trying D sails, the smallest of RC Lasers sail inventory. Winds were out of the S/SW for the day. That direction is very unusual direction for the river. The wind is coming from the river bank lined with 160 year old tall trees and backed up by large Victorian homes providing a huge wind shear that passed over the windward mark.

West Jersey Fleet members took the top three places for the day. Rob Seidelmann beat out Ryan Lippincott by one point to win the regatta. Third place went to Jamey Betz. Fourth and fifth went to Oxford, MD RC Laser Fleet members Dave Branning and Harry Henkel. We all gave Harry three cheers for his first regatta top five place in his 10 years of RC competition.

Thanks goes out to Terry Rapp, West Jerseys Fleet Captain who served as RD, and race committee member Dennis Lojek.
