Thoughts from a RD

Editors Note: This is an excerpt from the EC12 Class News Letter written by Joe Walter. I am republishing it here because I think it is a great insight to the thinking of an RD and a good reminder for us. I have sailed in many events and I know when I line up with Joe I am sailing with a sailor who exhibits some of the best sportsmanship I have seen.

It is never easy for our RDs to have to deal with weather issues. I have agonized over whether to call a race due to high winds or no wind. The times when I did, I was praised by some and hated by others. We all come to race at our regattas and the RD's job is to give you the best race he can. He tries his best to give you a good course that tests your sailing skills and not your eyesight. He tries to keep the flow of the regatta moving as best he can, giving the most heats without tiring skippers out. And, he has to make sure everything else, like lunch, drinks, chase boat, marks, course board and on and on, all get to the lake. Through it all, he worries if everyone is having a good time and that they will look forward to coming back next year. It is a challenge for us all to run a regatta and when the weather does not cooperate, it can be stressful.

Without the dedicated people who volunteer to put on our regattas, we would not get to enjoy these boats with our friends. Please keep it in mind at the next regatta. Support and thank the race staff for the hard work they do to try and give you a great regatta. Or, better yet, step up and volunteer to help out at your club's next event. - Joe Walter Race Director and EC12 Class Secretary

REGATTA RESULTS

Palm Beach Gardens Valentines' Day Regatta

by RD Gib Loesel

Feb 16 and 14, 2014

Class: EC12

There is a sea chantey that starts our "What will we do with a drunken sailor, what will we do with a drunken sailor earli in the morning" ... keep in mind that I have not had a drink in over 40 years so "it must have been th e other guys" that after several "toddies" on Friday night thought it would be a great idea if Jon Luscomb sailed and I would be the R.D., what the heck I came over and said I would help so why not.

Saturday morning arrived, winds were gentle out of the Northwest or there abouts.   The Gold Fleet (13 boats) hit the water for their first two races.  Joe Walter displayed some magic reaching the windward mark first in both races well ahead of the fleet, scoring a pair of bullets.  The rest of the day the entire fleet was mixing it up but at the end of the day Alan Perkins had worked his way into first place with Al Dion and Jon Luscomb giving chase.

Next came the Silver Fleet (11 boats).  Brenda Pardee crossed line first in the first race closely followed by her father Jim. Throughout the day all of the Skippers mixed it up and when "beer" time came it was Tom Germer, Bud Elder and Brenda Pardee.

During the day the winds came up and changed directions several times. B rigs were the choice of all who had them.   PBG's ground crew was great and the food fantastic as usual.

Eventually Sunday came and to borrow a line from the poem "The Cremation of Sam McGee" "The heavens scowled, (in this case) the Skippers howled and THE WIND BEGAN TO BLOW" and blow it did plus it was very cold.

The Silver Fleet was up first and prior to the start six skippers decided to stay on the beach.  Silver finished two races with multiple knock downs, jibe broaches and a few broken rigs, but they finished.

The top four finishing positions were: Brenda Pardee 1st; Bud Elder 2nd (plus the ancient mariner) Fred Greco 3rd and Jim Pardee 4th.

The Gold guys were up next, two skippers did not survive the warm up.  John B's C rig broke and Al Dion blew a rudd er servo in his warm up.  Fast Freddy Pheil (Mr. Heavy Air Skipper) posted two firsts.

I deemed it to be unsafe sailing conditions and called a halt to the regatta.

The Snowbird Tune Up Regatta
Punta Gorda, Florida
By Dave Branning

Location: Punta Gorda, Florida - Host Club: Sun Coast Model Yacht Club - Class: RC Laser

Nick Mortgu, AMYA RC Laser Secretary, and host, Jack Ward, combined forces to pull this Snowbird Tune Up Regatta together as a prelude to the North American Championships in Marco, FL. This was the inaugural Snowbird event on the RC Laser racing calendar. It was a terrific pond in a spacious town park with close in parking and two perfect launch docks. If there was a theme for the Snowbird Tune Up Regatta it was ROB SEIDELMANN DAY.

Rob reeled off 10 firsts out of 15 races to crush the fleet in shifting A Sail NW breezes in the morning then a robust B sail afternoon. Rob used clean starts and found good lanes to secure a control position right from the start gun. Rob was followed by Alan Perkins, in a borrowed boat. Alan is a renowned EC12 and Micro Magic Champion and is the current Florida State EC12 Champion. Alan was a strong second over Dave Branning, who stayed out of trouble with no race wins but near the top third in most races. Five RC sailors from other classes were able to borrow or cobble together boats to participate in the regatta. It is hoped that the Sun Coast Model Yacht club will pull together more RC Lasers for an active fleet.

The regatta was also supported by four skippers from the West Jersey RC Laser Fleet and three from the Oxford RC Laser Fleet in Maryland.....true Sunbirds enjoying the Florida sun and warm temps. Thanks to Dave Brawner, AMYA President, who kept the show going with good courses and a fast paced day, as PRO. Dave was supported by Paul Newfield and "Jim in the Kayak." Lisa Brawner and Beth Lippincott hustled together great lunches from Subway. Nick Mortgu provided embroidered duffel bags for the top three skippers and tee shirts for all competitors.

The SNOWBIRD TOP 5 RESULTS (15 Skippers):
1st - Rob Seidelmann 19
2nd - Alan Perkins 42
3rd - Dave Branning 82
4th - Gib Loesel 89
5th - Jack Ward 90

2013 RC Laser North American Championship

Mackle Park Marco Island, FL

The 2013 North American  RC Laser Championship goes to Jim Kaighin from the Bahamas. Jim sailed a 2, 2, 1, 3, 3, 5, 13 (throw out) day to win by seven points over Barr Batzer, from Lighthouse Point, FL. Barr actually had a one point lower gross score in this two throw out regatta. Third, 8 points back from Barr, was Rob Seidelmann from Collingswood, NJ. All of the top three skippers were neck and neck for the regatta and had a chance to take the top spot on the last day.

Weather was not too inviting early Sunday with 47 degrees and a sprinkling of rain. By 10 am the sun came out and the A sails were deployed, but as the winds swung to the NE and freshened, we had a mixture of C and B sails to finish the day. The sweaters and the jackets stayed on as the temps never quite got above the low 60's for the balance of the day. PRO, Dave Brawner, and his team of Harvey Spriggs, Dave Dumas, and Mary Lee Cale, kept the pace moving as the Promotion/Relegation format of two fleets completed 34 heats for 17 races for the regatta.  It was another wonderful experience sailing in Mackle Park, a venue perfectly suited for RC racing. Thanks also go to Rocky Cale and George Domenech of the host fleet who worked with the City of Marco Island and the Marco Island Yacht Club to round out a perfectly organized weekend.

The win for Jim Kaighin is his 4th regatta win at Mackle Park and his third North American Championship. Jim previously won the North Americans at Pocono Pines, PA and Oxford, MD.
