Intergallactica Race
Story by Tiller Monkey(Canada) Photos by Bob Schaffer(Oklahoma) CLASS: VictoriaLocation: San Antonio, TX
The Intergallactica Race is 1 race only.....no heats, no throw-outs, all boats on the Start line. Such is the pressure and glory of the Intergalactica. It's a rock `em, sock `em, long distance battle that stretches radios and eyeballs to their maximums...and sometimes beyond. And this year's Intergalactica was a Classic !!
The one and only Intergallactica Hack-fest 2012 Race was held as Saturday's last race at the 2012 Alamo Victoria Region 5 Championship regatta at the Woodlawn Sailing Club in San Antonio, Texas. In this freshening North-East breeze, all 28 boats would do a reaching start, and broad reach straight to the turn, disappear behind the Lighthouse, and then hopefully come out to the other side before sprinting back on a close reach to the finish line.
Several top sailors were concerned about the damage that could be caused to their boats as they rounded (hopefully) the Lighthouse with such limited vision. Some were planning to sail most of the way, stall for a while, turn safely away from the Lighthouse and then follow the fleet home. With another day of Alamo trophy racing coming tomorrow, that may have been a wise tactic. Such is the danger of the Intergalactica.
The Intergalactica start was clean and fast with all the usual suspects leading-off into the distance. But that's where it gets tough. It's hard to see whose boat is whose, or to even trim and steer your boat if you know which one it is. As several skippers saw that they had a chance at grabbing the Intergalactica victory, all caution was thrown away and 28 boats headed into the distance, like Columbus heading towards the edge of the Earth. Even the Race Announcer, Ray Seta, (a man never lost for words), was having trouble identifying yachts from such great distances to provide a commentary. The carnage in the fleet was appalling; boats were lost behind the Lighthouse, or sailing across the lake in a variety of directions....many of them beyond the scope of radio range.
For all 29 boats in the race there was a great story to tell. Yes, 29 boats, because even the Race Director was afloat in a small aluminum rescue boat. As he was pursuing, untangling and recovering boats as fast as his little boat would go.....he too was struck by the evil fate of the Intergalactica. His battery died, and he had to drift to a leeward shore. Someone drove there in a car and gave him oars that he used to row his `rescue boat' back to the Clubhouse. Such are the perils of the Intergalactica.
In the end, it was Gilbert MacLachlan that was the Winner of the 2012 Intergalactica Hack-fest.
If you haven't ever sailed in an Intergalactica, you should. Go to San Antonio........ It's out of this World.

2012 US12 R1CR By Ron Rhault CLASS: US12
Date: October 21,2012
Location: Worcester, MA
Host Club: Greater Worcester Model Yacht Club
The Greater Worcester Model Yacht Club hosted the 2012 US12 R1CR on October 21, 2012. There were 9 boats participating under very challenging wind conditions, the winds were 5 to 15 mph and gust over 20 coming out of the west. Unfortunately the west wind is blocked by a hospital on a hill so we had swirling winds all day but with the strong breeze we managed to complete 20 heats, 10 in the morning and 10 in the afternoon. The morning heats were dominated by Ron Rhault winning 5 of the 10 heats sailed and holding a 1 point lead over Bob Shluger at the lunch break. The afternoon was dominated by Bob Shluger winning 5 of the 10 heats sailed in the afternoon and propelling him to the win, this is his 3rd championship in the last 4 years. Trophies were awarded to the top 3 places: first to Bob Shluger with 34.2 points, second to Ron Rhault with 42 points and third to Mike Flynn with 62 points. The Tweat Scoring System was used, great computer scoring system, designed for odd-even but works great for one fleet. Race Committee & Valuable Assistants: Ron Rhault, RD; Tracy Flynn, Line Judge; Valerie Haggerty & Mary Geobel, Scorekeepers; Patrick Haggerty, Trophy Presenter

Holiday Regatta 2012 Punta Gorda Florida December 1&2 , 2012
Class: EC12
The Holiday Regatta hosted by the Sun Coast Model Sailing Club at South County Park, Punta Gorda was the first stop on the winter circuit for the Florida Association EC 12 Class.
Twenty One Skippers gathered to do battle under beautiful Florida skies with fair winds for the two day event. Saturday morning the Northerly winds settled in, 5 to 8 mph, and a good windward, leeward course was set using gates on the downwind legs. Jon Luscomb jumped out to a flying start by knocking four first places in a row and had the other Skippers scratching their heads. As the day progressed the places started to even out. In the early afternoon the winds turned Easterly and because of pond lay out the course could be and was changed to take advantage of the new wind direction. The exact same wind conditions were duplicated on Sunday however the wind speed increased to the 12 to 15 mph range later in the day.
By the end of Saturday Alan Perkins had found his way into 1st place, followed closely by Jon Luscomb and Al Dion. Dick Hedderick was in 4th place, Jake Leo 5th, Bob Greer 6th and Fred Pheil 7th. When the final gun went off Sunday the first three positions stayed the same but Fred bumped Jake, Bob and Dick finishing and taking home the 4th place trophy, Dick finished 5th.
Under the odd/even system 32 A & B races were run which equaled a total of 16 races for scoring purposes. While Alan and Jon captured 15 first places between them 12 other skippers also crossed the finish line in first place giving them bragging rights to a first place.
Full results can be found on the Florida Association regatta page.
What a great way to spend a weekend, a good time was had by all!!!

Freeze Your Butt Off Regatta CLASS: EC12 Location: Laurel Acres Park, Mt. Laurel New Jersey Date: Sunday December 2, 2012
Entries: 22 Wind: Light and all over the place. PHOTOS BY: Jim Flach PHOTOS LINK By David Brawner Ok, so Mother Nature gave us would become a warm sunny day in December for our Freeze Your Butt Off Regatta. In return, she screwed with the breeze both in direction and strength most of the day. Simply put, it was just one of those days that you do the best you can with what you have. I had courses set all over the lake. Thanks to a very cooperative fleet, everyone managed to sail 10 races using our new CESS Pool fleet management system. The true hero of the day was Nick Mortgu, who not only supplied regatta hats, but also had an embroidered award for everyone. In addition, he was responsible for the chili at lunch and scoring. Thanks. The new FYBOR champion is none other than EC12 National Champion, Dave Ramos. It will be interesting to see the FYBOR perpetual trophy on display right next to the Nationals trophy in his shop. They are at different ends of the spectrum as far as class goes. Ernest Freeland crushed Jamey Betz by a full point to take runner up honors. Better known as the first person not to have to take home the FYBOR trophy. A lot of people came from rather far distances to take part in this regatta. Thanks to all for making the effort. It was great to hang with friends all day. 1 David Ramos 21 2 Ernest Freeland 23 3 Jamey Betz 24 4 Chuck Luscomb 31.5 5 Mark Rinehart 34 |
