Ron Locke SBMYC 2012 IOM season Champion Long time member Ronny Locke sailed his very quick number 64 V-7 consistently all season, rightfully earning the crown in a most competitive fleet. I couldn't think of anyone more deserving. Ron has served SBMYC as past Commodore, IOM fleet Captain, and ODOM fleet captain. Well done Ron! SBMYC's IOM Championship Regatta final race of the season was sailed at Lake Cunningham in San Jose, Saturday, October 8. Ten IOMs made the starting line under clear sky, a high temperature of 73˚F (22.7˚C). Variable winds for the first four heats 0-3 mph (0-2.6 knots) with 180 degree shifts really had the participants guessing. Point leader, Ron Locke, had it pretty much figured out winning two out of the first four heats. A brief lunch break followed the fourth heat while waiting for the wind to settle in. N-NW wind 6-11 mph (5.2-9.5 knots) filled after the break. Steve Toschi, sailing his Micro Brew II, did his best to overcome the 31 point lead Ron had going into the final. Steve narrowed Ron's lead to 21 points, settling for second place in the series.
Steve, not quite satisfied with his boat's performance, designed and built a new version of his Micro Brew II and soon will debut his next creation, the Micro Brew III. Steve said, "Hopefully, I can make the Oracle Regatta on the 28th, and if I can, it will be the maiden voyage of my new boat." Steve's present boat is quick and I'm sure his Micro Brew III will be quicker. All I can say about his new boat is, "Look out Lintels, Britpops, and Chienz!" Word is Steve has taken orders and the list could quickly grow. SBMYC would like to welcome Glen Murray to San Jose's IOM fleet. Glen recently purchased a Robot, sail number 109. It did not take long for the freshmen IOMer to get his 109 up to speed. Glen, sailing for the first time in San Jose, scored three thirds and a forth. Nicely done Glen, we hope you'll be able to make the trip back soon! The gestation of the Robot's basic design is attributed to New Zealander Martin Firebrace. The Robot is beautifully crafted by James Edwards of Robot yachts. Robot yachts is presently building the Britpop under license from Brad Gibson. Special thanks to Glenn McDonald for traveling from the North Bay and bringing his number 68 Kite. Glen is getting his boat moving, scoring a second in heat number 6.

SeaWind Region 6 Championship Regatta
by Mark Erdrich
Nine SeaWind skippers came out to compete in the 2012 SeaWind Region 6 Championship Regatta held in West Sacramento, CA on October 13th & 14th. Joining eight local skippers was SeaWind Class Secretary and multiple SeaWind National Champion Mike Eades from Arizona.
Mike showed off his skills and consistency, easily winning the 25 race regatta with only 4 finishes below 3rd place. Sacramento Model Yacht Club commodore Jeff Romero finished 2nd, and Tom Koop came in 3rd.
The first day had light but fairly consistent winds allowing us to get in 16 races. The winds did not cooperate the 2nd day and though we managed to get 9 short races in the books, it was very light and shifty, leaving the boats with absolutely no wind for minutes at a time.
Special thanks go to Mike Rindflesch for creating the magnificent awards and for bringing in all of the equipment for setting up the race course. Thanks also go to Steve Vaczovsky, Cheryl Rindflesch, and Teresa Leach for their assistance as Race Directors and scoring.

RC Laser Region II Championship October 27, 2012
Sponsored by Tred Avon YC and the Oxford RC Laser Fleet
Venue: TAYC Dock
PRO: Dave Branning
Scorers: Bonnie Richards, Elaine Hepkin and Melanie Buchanan
Seventeen top skippers arrived at TAYC in Oxford, MD on Saturday, October 27 and were greeted to breezy and choppy conditions as a preview to hurricane Sandy. The day was spent with "C" sails as the NE winds and Tred Avon River chop kept the excitement going throughout the day, but the rain and cold stayed away. Don Barker, Chestertown, MD, secured a well-deserved win with a steady day in the A fleet and three bullets in the 9 races sailed. Don is the first winner of the newly created Jim Karr Region II Perpetual Trophy, named for Oxford's Jim Karr, who was responsible for bring RC Lasers to the Mid-Atlantic Area. Don defeated Riverton's Ryan Lippincott, also with three wins, and Oxford's Roger Vaughan, who was third, three points behind Lippincott. Rounding out the top five was Riverton's Jim Flach in 4th and NYC's, Hank Buchanan in fifth. Most of the fleet, other than the top four, spent the day moving up and down the A and B fleets, in a Promotion/Relegation format, and ended up counting some double figure races that kept them out of the money. This was a top notch competitive fleet and sailing was aggressive and demonstrated terrific starting and mark rounding skills in the choppy conditions. Thanks to TAYC and the Oxford RC Laser Fleet for a terrific venue and their always perfect hospitality.

2012 Annapolis EC12 Regatta Edited by Tom Phillips
Well we have crowned the 2012 Annapolis EC12 Regatta and Region 2 Champion. This regatta also marks the end of the sailing season for the Colonial Cup. Over two days we sounded the starting gun 27 times in conditions that covered the spectrum. We saw light and shifty to puffy and scary for short periods of time. Never did the wind maintain velocity long enough for the skippers to pull out their B Rigs.
In the end Dave Ramos took home the top award. Mark Rinehart, Jamey Betz and Don Barker all sailed well to keep the competition close. Dave finished the regatta with three bullets to bring his total to ten for first place finishes. Not to be out done Rinehart also matched Ramos with ten bullets for the regatta. Jamey had six bullets evenly split between the two days and Dave Branning had the other bullet. Very consistent and generally in the hunt was Don Barker. Every skipper had at least a top five finish and seven of the skippers had a top three or better finish.
The weather was near perfect each day and on Sunday the skippers were having as much fun socializing on the dock as they were sailing. It was a struggle to motivate them to splash their boats to go sailing again. They seemed to be having a lot of fun talking about RC sailboats and the such. If you haven't sailed in this regatta you are missing one of the great EC12 sailing venues. Hopefully you can join us in 2013.

2012 US12 R1CR By Ron Rhault
The Greater Worcester Model Yacht Club hosted the 2012 US12 R1CR on October 21, 2012. There were 9 boats participating under very challenging wind conditions, the winds were 5 to 15 mph and gust over 20 coming out of the west. Unfortunately the west wind is blocked by a hospital on a hill so we had swirling winds all day but with the strong breeze we managed to complete 20 heats, 10 in the morning and 10 in the afternoon. The morning heats were dominated by Ron Rhault winning 5 of the 10 heats sailed and holding a 1 point lead over Bob Shluger at the lunch break. The afternoon was dominated by Bob Shluger winning 5 of the 10 heats sailed in the afternoon and propelling him to the win, this is his 3rd championship in the last 4 years. Trophies were awarded to the top 3 places: first to Bob Shluger with 34.2 points, second to Ron Rhault with 42 points and third to Mike Flynn with 62 points. The Tweat Scoring System was used, great computer scoring system, designed for odd-even but works great for one fleet.
