Greetings!

Welcome to the BioWorks Bulletin - October 2014

Neonicotinoid insecticides are rapidly becoming much concern to growers and their customers. With increasing pressure from big box retailers to reduce neonicotinoids, growers are looking for alternate products. In this month's bulletin we will discuss safe and effective biological insecticides you can use to protect your crops.
What can I do to Reduce or Eliminate Neonicotinoid Insecticide Use?

Carter Kent, BioWorks Great Lakes Technical Sales Manager

Recently, we have had several growers tell us that their customers are requesting them to eliminate or reduce use of neonicotinoid insecticides on the plant material grown for them. Other growers simply want to reduce their use of these and other insecticides to reduce pesticide resistance or improve human and environmental safety. The most common question I get regarding all of these situations is, "What products does BioWorks offer that can help to control insect pests, especially Aphids, Whiteflies and Thrips?"

The short answer is that we offer BotaniGard®, Mycotrol®O, Molt-X®, SuffOil-X®, and NemaShield®, to help control the majority of horticultural pests. BotaniGard and Mycotrol O (BotaniGard's OMRI-listed formulation) contain the same active ingredient and share the same modes of action (MOAs) against insect pests. Molt-X, NemaShield and SuffOil-X each have different active ingredients and MOAs from one other and from BotaniGard and Mycotrol-O that act differently against pests. When used alone, with each other, or with other biological and chemical products, each of these products can help growers safely and effectively control the majority of insect and mite pests and better manage resistance to chemical insecticides.

BioWorks has products to help you effectively, compatibly and safely control insect pests. Combined with "clean" plant material, proper sanitation, scouting and monitoring, these products can help you deliver on your customers' requests to reduce or eliminate neonicontinoid insecticides or to just manage insecticide resistance.

Attention California Growers!

RootShield® PLUS Granules and WP formulations are now approved for use in California. RootShield PLUS is a preventative control of major root diseases including soilborne Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia, Pythium, Fusarium, Thielaviopsis, and Cylindrocladium.

One application of RootShield PLUS protects roots for up to 12 weeks and costs less than 2˘ per 6-inch pot. Lower your costs by eliminating or reducing the need for chemical root fungicides, and reducing material and labor costs of repetitive drenching.

One Grower's Comments:

"I was looking for a safer way to control insects and fungus. After using BioWorks' products we are getting the results I expected and have made Westwinds safer for our employees and customers.

Since I started incorporating RootShield PLUS Granules, our plants have had healthier root systems and none of the fungus problems we had at times before. We have been using BioWorks products now for 2 years at Westwinds Nursery and couldn't be happier with the results."
