Game Changer

When I envision ArtsKC, I see an organization charged with unleashing the power of the arts in the region. To fulfill that potential, we have decided to relocate our offices to the Crossroads Arts and Design District. We are making this move because it will grow our visibility and accessibility and lead to expanded awareness of our programs. A heightened presence for ArtsKC will make it possible to increase support for the arts and meet the changing needs of the community and our partners.

Our new offices will be located at the corner of Southwest Boulevard and Baltimore where we will benefit from the area's popularity and status as a gathering place for arts enthusiasts and artists. Our new home will feature a larger community space to expand our role as a connector, convener, and advocate for the region's most important arts conversations. And I am thrilled to announce that we already have over $56,000 committed to our $100,000 campaign to relocate ArtsKC to the Crossroads.  Thanks to Bank of America and Spencer Fane for their leadership gifts to this campaign. I ask that everyone consider making a gift today to help lay the foundation for our future.  A gift of $30, $75 or even $150 on our Indiegogo campaign makes a big impact on our success and each gift has great perks.  Please make your donation today.

KC Art Snap - Get the App!

This mobile application developed by Mersoft in partnership with ArtsKC, allows users to take photos at Kansas City arts landmarks with famous local creatives from both the past and present using augmented reality -- technology that allows computer graphics and images to be overlaid on real-world view captured by the mobile device.  In this case, users of KC Art Snap are able to capture friends and family posing with Kansas City art celebrities at their corresponding landmarks.

Mersoft is implementing augmented reality technology in connection with the arts for the second time after its project with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in 2012 which allowed museum visitors to experience art in a new way.  It was tremendously successful and so we actively sought a partnership with ArtsKC this year. As a software engineering company, they're always looking for ways to energize their team members to help them think creatively, work together and push the limits of their current knowledge to try new things.  They've found a great way to do that is through a partnership with the arts.

Our Supporters:
Why Lathrop & Gage Supports the Arts

The Lathrop & Gage law firm and its predecessors have long been supporters of the arts community in Kansas City.  The Firm has a number of attorneys who have been board members, including presidents, of arts organizations throughout the region, and offers free or discounted legal services to a number of arts organizations.  In addition, the Firm supports arts organizations through ticket purchases, contributions, and by being one of the Workplace Giving Campaign participants for ArtsKC.

We have found, particularly through our Workplace Giving Campaign program, that the arts touch the lives of many of our associates, from the senior partners to some of our most junior employees. One of our administrative assistants sent a Workplace Giving Campaign gift with a note that a relative of hers was a struggling artist who had benefited early in her career with a grant from the ArtsKC Fund, and that the relative had managed to parlay that grant into greater success with her art business.  Several others have been introduced to the arts through our campaign, and began to attend arts events after becoming aware of the importance of the arts to Kansas City.  A few have become donors not only to ArtsKC but to other arts organizations through having been introduced to the arts by the firm.

The ability of our firm, and many other Kansas City employers, to attract talented employees is to a significant extent determined by the many offerings our community has.  The arts are a very important part of that, and we are aware that we would not have been able to attract and retain the skilled colleagues we have in our firm if it were not for the many arts offerings that our community enjoys.

Lathrop & Gage is pleased to be a supporter of ArtsKC and of the work it does in promoting the growth and development of all of the arts throughout the Kansas City region.

Staff Picks - Bev Hessefort

I don't have much experience attending professional dance productions, but one event I'm sure to get to this summer is the Kansas City Dance Festival on June 20 & 21st. Each performance will feature multiple forms of dance including ballet, classical, contemporary and modern. It will also feature a performance of Petit Mort by members of the Nashville Ballet Company. Tickets start at only $20 and it's a great way to experience several different dance forms, in one evening, by world-renowned dancers from all over!

As the weather gets nicer, I like to get outside with my family. On Mother's Day, StoneLion Puppet Theatre will be holding its 8th annual Mother's Day for Mother Earth performance on the south lawn at the Nelson-Atkins Museum on May 11th from 1-4 pm. This event has become the largest community arts program in the city. Since it's on Mother's day, I'm hoping that my husband and kids make a reservation for us to eat at Cafe Sebastienne at the Kemper Museum or in Rozzelle Court at the Nelson-Atkins.
