A letter from the CEO...

The KC Chiefs Tackle the World of Art

Recently, I attended the opening of the Kansas City Chiefs' new art program.  Initiated by Sharron Hunt, and developed with assistance from local experts, including Paul Dorrell from the Leopold Gallery, the collection features eleven works by regional artists.  As an arts enthusiast, I was pleased to see the Chiefs send a clear signal that they value the arts as an important cultural amenity.  Most people would agree that having a sports team, like the Chiefs, is important to our region and the same is true of the arts. Everybody benefits from the vibrancy of our arts scene, regardless of their level of participation.  And kudos to the KC Chiefs for selecting fine art pieces by local artists. It would have been easy to select only artists with national reputations.  Our region has many accomplished artists and I am so pleased to see them getting the attention they deserve.  Artists with work now installed include: Philomene Bennett Alan Chow, Matthew Dehaemers, Phil Epp, Lisa Grossman, Anne Lindberg, Adolfo Martinez, Elliot Norquist, Charlie Podrebarac, Jesse Small, and Dierk Van Keppel. In addition, pieces by Nedra Bonds, Jose Faus, Jun Kaneko, and Terry Evans are due to be installed in the future as the collection continues to grow. For fans who don't have tickets on the Scout Investment Club Level, you will be able to see parts of the collection on Arrowhead Stadium tours and an art-specific tour and curriculum for schools is now in the design phase.

Thank you Kansas City Chiefs for your continued support of the arts in KC!

Sincerely,

HB

Volunteers Needed!

ArtsKC Community Art Quilt Project @ the 2013 Plaza Art Fair

It is nearly Plaza Art Fair time and ArtsKC is recruiting volunteers for their booth the weekend of September 20-22!  The ArtsKC booth this year will feature the ArtsKC Community Art Quilt Project.  Fair-goers will decorate quilt squares (generously donated by Fabri-Quilt) with fabric markers - any design of their choice!  The squares will later be turned into quilts that will be donated to reStart, a metro area agency that provides shelter and supportive services to homeless men, women, youth and families.

ArtsKC booth volunteers are needed to hand out materials, answer questions and assist fair-goers as needed. If you'd like to sign up for a volunteer shift, simply register using our online sign-up sheets.  If you have any questions contact Erinn Faulconer at Faulconer@ArtsKC.org.

We believe this project not only provides warmth for someone in need, but inspiration and encouragement as well.  For fair-goers, we hope the experience provides an opportunity to show their creative side and learn more about the plight of those less fortunate.

Thank you to Fabri-Quilt, Bank of America, Highwoods Properties, and reStart, Inc.!

Burns & McDonnell Sweeps the

2013 Art@Work Challenge

Employee Artists and CEO Greg Graves
On August 19th, 2013, Burns & McDonnell added "Most Artistic Company" to their long list of corporate accolades. The company's artist-engineers earned the award by receiving the most corporate "wins" during this summer's Art@Work corporate arts challenge.

Beginning last Spring, companies across the metro area held in-house competitions in  visual arts, literary arts, music, film, and dance. First place winners from each company competed in the city-wide events held July 14 - August 4th. Jurors from the arts community selected "Best in Show" winners in 23 categories ranging from Photography to 8-Word Story. The general public had their say as well, casting over 4,000 votes to select their "People's Choice Favorites. "During the Art@Work Finals on August 3rd at the Gem Theater, Burns & Mac took home the gold in the following categories:
  • Best in Show - Photography, Ian Lacy for Locomotion
  • Best in Show - Fiber, Maggie Miller for Not Waving by Drowning
  • Best in Show - Corporate Collaborative, Brandon Guffey, Mark Fagan, Lee Orrison, Anitia Pierden, Brady Ritter, Ann Scheer, Beth Mackey, Alan Burchardt, Teri Stegmann, and Robb Barbur for Doodle of the Day
  • Best in Show - Open Verse Poetry, Britt Reed for Reflections on a Kitchen Table
  • Best in Show - "A Picture is Worth 1000 Words," Laura Nies for Jose Herrar

The trophy, commissioned months earlier, was created by Burns & Mac's own Mary Fasone, a Design Application Specialist with a degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. A fitting tribute to Kansas City's most artistic company.
