 Greetings!

Robotic Sleeves are possible and safe.  We will be offering this option now.  Psychology options are also expanding.  Read below.

Robots in the News:  Safer?  Better?
Robotic Sleeve Gastrectomy
Robotic surgery

The Robot is really just an extension of the standard laparoscopic procedure.  We still use small holes and long instruments.  However, the Robot has become the dominant method for hysterectomy and prostate surgery.  For Gastric surgery, we anticipate a few potential advantages of the Robot:

1.  Better visualization:  the Robot give 3-dimensional views that are amazing.  We also get a close-up view that is helpful.

2.  Wrists and Elbows:  instead of surgery using long, non-bendable instruments, the Robot uses motions that simulate the open operations and allow for more precise sewing and tying.

3.  With the Sleeve, the Robot allows us to oversew the staple line.  We cannot be certain that this will further lower the risk of leak, but it is possible that the oversew will provide some improvement.

Given our laparoscopic experience, this was a very simple transition.  The Robot room is not always available.  For now, most patients will tend to get the standard laparoscopic approach.  We will continue to explore and offer to patients as availability increases.  But we are still excited to be at the forefront of surgical advances.

Impact of Stress, Anxiety, and Depression on Successful Weight Loss!!!

Many studies have shown that Stress, Anxiety, and Depression can impact your weight.  You will tend to eat "comfort" foods that might be high-fat snacks, sweets, or sliders.  Unconsciously you might feel better after eating those things, but you ultimately feel guilt and other bad thoughts once you are aware of what you ate.

How do we solve this issue?

In the office, we have started a Depression screening form which gives a validated estimate of Depression.  It is done on an ipad and is confidential.

The solution is usually NOT more medication.  We believe that counseling is appropriate.  It is better to sequentially talk through the stress issues, come up with solutions or awareness, and put a healing salve on the emotional wounds.

If you have seen one of the psychiatrists, psychologists, or counselors in the past, this may be a time to set up an appointment and begin healing this stress.  This will reward you with a better approach to your diet and weight management.

The LifeTree Counseling Center has offered their services to include group, one-on-one, and weekend times to our patients who might be in need.  They accept nearly all insurance companies.

We have found them to be wonderful additions to our group of psychologists and counselors.

Dr. Jeffrey Henke is now Board-Certified in Surgery
Dr. Jeffrey HenkeBoard certification is an important milestone for all surgeons.  It requires 4 years of Medical School, 5 years of Surgical Training, a 4 hour written examination, and a half-day of oral examination testing all aspects of surgery.

Dr. Henke passed this final step of Oral Examination to become Board Certified.  This is great and positive news that we love to share.

Dr. Kuhn and Dr. Henke presented their experience with the Role of Manometry in patients undergoing Sleeve Gastrectomy.  This is one of the first papers looking at this new technique to make sure that the esophagus and stomach are OK prior to a sleeve.
