Questions for
Reflection

When we ask 'what is it that we value?' we don't have to ponder long to get an answer; we only need to look back at our calendars and receipts, our credit card statements and check stubs. We value what / where we spend our valuables.

What is that you value in this church's ministry? What programs, ministries and missions most touch your heart and joy?

Sunday's Message

Putting Worth in Our Worship
The Rev. Dr. Steve Harrington, preaching

SVPC Sanctuary Stained Glass by Beth Robb There begins to emerge out of the ubiquitous green of the foliage around us pockets of riotous color-celebrations of autumn's joy. Just so, worship is a bright moment in our week when we celebrate together the Creator's love and gifts to us. In this season of stewardship we indicate to our church an estimate of what we hope to give in the coming year as an expression of our gratitude to God and of our support for the church's work-it is at the heart of our worship! I hope to see you in one of our three services this Sunday.

Grace and Peace,
Steve

Theme for the Day

In The Light by Matt Dalrymple on creationswap
One of the primary ways to measure value is by looking at how much we would give for something. If we are willing to invest significant resources in something--whether it be of our time, money, or commitment--then we know that "thing" has great value for us. Conversely that for which we give little do we care little about. We can discern our hearts by examining where our treasures lie. As we come into worship today let us give of ourselves fully to God in worship!
Scripture Passages

Luke 21:1-4

Jesus looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury; he also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. He said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on."

II Samuel 24:18-25

That day Gad came to David and said to him, "Go up and erect an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite." Following Gad's instructions, David went up, as the Lord had commanded. When Araunah looked down, he saw the king and his servants coming toward him; and Araunah went out and prostrated himself before the king with his face to the ground. Araunah said, "Why has my lord the king come to his servant?" David said, "To buy the threshing floor from you in order to build an altar to the Lord, so that the plague may be averted from the people." Then Araunah said to David, "Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him; here are the oxen for the burnt offering, and the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood. All this, O king, Araunah gives to the king." And Araunah said to the king, "May the Lord your God respond favorably to you." But the king said to Araunah, "No, but I will buy them from you for a price; I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God that cost me nothing." So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and offerings of well-being. So the Lord answered his supplication for the land, and the plague was averted from Israel.
