Jim Laughland - AGC's Premier Shooter Presents Alice Bull Trophy
CMP photo

By Ashley Brugnone, CMP Writer

Jim Laughland, 77, of Timonium, Md., was the honorary presenter of the Alice Bull Trophy during the 2016 National Trophy Rifle Matches at Camp Perry. To him, the trophy is more than just a trophy - it's a reminder of his marksmanship past and the legacy he has left on the grounds of Camp Perry.

Liz Bark Captures Honors
Liz Bark

Elizabeth Bark originally wanted nothing to do with shooting. In her initial meeting with Coach Chuck Sayre, she had no desire to even try shooting a rifle. Her comment was "I am a cellist, not a shooter." Coach Sayre eventually convinced her to give it a try and as they say, the rest is history.

Six years later, Elizabeth has emerged as one of the top air rifle competitors in the country. Over the past six years, Elizabeth has excelled at shooting in both the Sporter and Precision Divisions of Air Rifle competition. During this time, Elizabeth has won several state titles, has been invited to many regional and national tournaments and has earned several awards from the CMP and NRA.

At her last 3 Position Air Rifle tournament as a junior, Elizabeth achieved two goals that she always strived for:
  1. A perfect score in one of the three positions (prone, standing and kneeling) at a national championship.
  2. Setting a National Record in one of the three positions.
Liz Bark & Coach Chuck Sayre
Elizabeth qualified as one of only 15 shooters, from nationwide competition, to participate in the American Legion's 3 Position National Air Rifle Championship. The competition was held at the Olympic Training Center, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The competition consisted of shooting 4 relays over a two day period. Each relay consisted of 20 shots each, in of the three positions, prone, standing and kneeling.  On the second day, Liz started the first relay with a perfect score of 200, ending the relay with a score of 586. She achieved her first goal, but the second relay was where the real excitement would begin.

While not having her best score after finishing the standing position, Elizabeth was looking at shooting her very last kneeling (which is her favorite position) in air rifle. These would be her last 20 shots in a 3 Position Air Rifle competition. With the encouragement of her coach and parents, and some positive introspective thinking, she decided to go for it and attempt to end her career with a score of 200.

As we were watching her shoot, everything was falling into place for Elizabeth. After 10 shots her score was 100-10X. Soon we were looking at the scoreboard and it was 150-15X, 160-16X, 170-17X, 180-18X, 190-19X. As we approached shot 20, Elizabeth took a long time to compose herself, as we were holding our breath waiting for the shot. Elizabeth pulled the trigger and the score came up 200-20X.
With her last shot in a 3 Position tournament, Liz set three national records in the kneeling position. While several shooters have previously shot a 200 in the kneeling position, none had ever shot a 200-20X.

Elizabeth thus became the first junior to achieve a perfect score of 200-20X. The National Records she set were in 3 Position Air Rifle Precision Kneeling: Overall, Junior Club and American Legion. Elizabeth was representing the Stemmers Run Rifle and Pistol Club and American Legion Post 122, Liberty Road, at the tournament.

Currently Elizabeth represents and shoots for Stemmers Run Rifle and Pistol Club (AGC member) and the Maryland State Rifle and Pistol Association (AGC member). She has also represented and shot for Arlington Rifle and Pistol Club (AGC member) and Anne Arundel Fish & Game. She is very proud to have represented the AGC and the State of Maryland in many local, regional and national tournaments.

43rd Bombardment Group Reunion

On August 27th, the AGC hosted a reunion of veterans of the WW2 era 43rd Bombardment Group. Click on the link below for the full story in the Sunpaper.

Polytechnic High School (Poly)
Gun Club Rifle Team - Circa 1924

The Sunpaper article on the 43rd Bombardment Group reunion prompted an email from Richard Messick, son of former AGC member Sam Messick. A member of the 43rd has a last name very similar to a member of the Poly Rifle Club in the mid 1920's. Richard Messick remembered the name from the back of the photo below. It is unknown if there is any family connection between the two men.

We thank Richard Messick for sharing this piece of AGC's history with us.
