Greetings!

The turnout for the Senate Committee hearing was an outstanding success. While the media downplayed our numbers, Governor O'Malley knows the truth and the truth rocked him back on his heels. Various sources have reported that the Administration is now scrambling to recover and is working on a multitude of amendments to the O'Malley gun ban. The Governor is in too deep to just walk away and he cannot admit defeat. This is a debacle of his own making and it is the direct result of his attempt to exploit a tragedy to further his political career. The Governor's bill was an excessive overreach and because it was written in haste, it is very poorly written. The flaws were obvious and egregious as was pointed out on February 6th.

Our challenge is to show that we are not a single-shot rifle. We must prove on March 1st and March 5th that we can produce this level of turn-out whenever necessary. I realize that this is a very large request, but we cannot win without your active "boots on the ground" support. The Governor will judge our strength and resolve by our numbers on March 1st and March 5th.

On a similar note, the email volume through the AGC's "Email your Legislators" system has dropped from over 100,000 per day before the first Gun Bill day to fewer than 2,000 per day. We cannot afford to give the Maryland General Assembly any rest in Annapolis. Many legislators have told me they are not paying attention to the volume. That is "Annapolis speak" for "I hope I can discourage you, because my staff is overwhelmed just counting emails."

If you cannot join us in Annapolis, please support our efforts by making telephone calls and sending emails to the Maryland General Assembly using AGC's "Email your Legislators" system.

2 More Gun Bill Days are Scheduled  -  51 Bills to be Heard

Briefly stated, here is the situation:

A total of 51 bills will be heard over 2 days in 3 Committees. Each day we will have bills being heard in 2 different Committees at the same time. This tactic is intended to dilute our numbers, which is why a strong "boots on the ground" turnout is so important. This is especially true on March 5th because the hearings will be in different buildings.

Friday, March 1st @ 1:00 PM:
  • 4 bills in the House Health & Government Operations Committee
  • 7 bills in the House Judiciary Committee (including the Governor's gun ban)
Tuesday, March 5th @ 1:00 PM
  • 15 bills in the House Judiciary Committee
  • 25 bills in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee
Be sure to click the links immediately below for important information.

Keep up the email pressure; this is critical if we are to prevail in the face of the Governor's attack on our rights.

Governor O'Malley Believes that Hunters are Easily Deceived by His Lies

Following the historic and unprecedented display of opposition to his gun ban legislation, Governor O'Malley repeats the lie that his gun ban will not impact hunters. He probably thinks we hunters are stupid. Does the Governor actually think that we don't know the liberal buzz words and phases the gun banners always use: "Let me be clear," "common sense proposals," "committed to protecting," etc.

Several hunters have reported receiving the email below. It appears that Governor O'Malley has gained access to the email addresses provided to the DNR by hunters who purchased hunting licenses via the DNR website. This appears to be a violation of DNR's privacy policy. We are currently investigation this.

If you deleted the Governor's email from your system you can still protest the Governor's illegal use of the DNR database by sending an email to:

Subject: JUNIOR WATERFOWL HUNTING DAY AND PROTECTING TRADITIONS

February 7, 2013

Dear ,

I wanted to make sure you are aware of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' latest Junior Waterfowl Hunting Day, which takes place this Saturday, February 9. Junior Hunting Days provide wonderful opportunities for young hunters and their adult mentors to get outside and enjoy the proud tradition of hunting in Maryland.

Hunting is a part of our history and is woven into the fabric of our State's culture. We appreciate everything you and all other conservation-minded hunters do for Maryland.

I also want to take this opportunity to address you directly about the proposal we recently introduced to reduce gun violence. Our goal is to enact common sense proposals to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals, and to try to reduce the risk of a mass shooting like the one that occurred in Newtown.

Let me be clear: We are committed to protecting hunters and their traditions. That's why we specifically carved out shotguns and rifles from the licensing requirements of our bill.

This bill will NOT impact your ability to introduce a young hunter to the sport and the conservation stewardship ethic borne of that experience.

Good luck on Saturday and I look forward to hearing your stories from the field.

Sincerely,

Martin O'Malley

Governor O'Malley Pleads for Emails Supporting of Gun Ban

The Governor's email includes links to the newly formed anti-gun "organization" Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence.

If you write using this system, be sure to be POLITE AND RESPECTFUL.

Subj: D****, we need you

D****,

Whether it's horrific mass shootings like the ones in Newtown and Columbine, or murders on the streets of our cities, we lose far too many American lives each year to gun violence.

That's why we've introduced a comprehensive plan that would ban military-style assault weapons, limit large ammunition capacity and require licenses for handgun purchases. It invests in security upgrades for our schools and establishes a "Maryland Center for School Safety." And it tries to keep guns out of the hands of people with violent tendencies stemming from mental illness by expanding mental health crisis services.

But let me be clear, we respect hunters and sportsmen -- that's why we explicitly carve out shotguns and rifles from the licensing requirements of our bill.

Lobbyists for the gun manufacturers are working hard to oppose these common-sense initiatives. If we're going to get these proposals passed, everyone will need to lend their voice. Here are three important ways you can get involved:

  • Tell lawmakers in Annapolis to support our comprehensive proposal, which includes common-sense measures to reduce gun violence. You can find and contact your legislator here (click "Take Action"): Find your legislator here.
  • Express your support for the comprehensive approach to reducing gun violence by leaving a message for us on Facebook. We need to collect as many voices as we can speaking up for this important legislation.
  • Tweet a message of support using the hashtag #PreventGunViolence

Who can watch the devastating images of these horrific tragedies and who can see the pictures of those young faces or their anguished parents and honestly say that we are doing enough? We must do more. We will do more. But we need your help to get it done.

Your voice could very well make the difference in preventing the next gun related tragedy.  Please speak out today.

Thank you,

Martin O'Malley

Gun Safety Update

As anti-gun control emails continue to pour into my inbox, I am still concerned about the lack of correspondence from gun safety advocates. While the voices of gun control advocates are conspicuously silent, I want to thank Attorney General Doug Gansler for convening a forum on gun violence held Monday at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School Of Law, which highlighted many of the upcoming firearms bills as well as the important issue of illegal gun use in Baltimore and around the State. It is important to continue having these frank and rational conversations about what realistically can and cannot be done to keep our children and citizens safe from gun violence.

Note: Bold italic font was added for clarity, it did not appear in the original email from Delegate Cardin.
E-mail Blitz - Send 1,000,000 Emails to the Legislature

Governor O'Malley is doing everything he can to offset the tidal wave of pro-gun, pro 2nd Amendment, pro-Freedom emails you have been sending.

Let's not stop at 750,000; let's go for 1,000,000!

Contact your fellow gun owners in Maryland and tell them to use our "Email you Legislators" link to voice their opposition to the Governor's gun ban.

Your legislators still need to hear from you and the AGC has provided an effective tool to help Maryland's gun owners.

The "Email your Legislators" feature on the AGC Website's Legislative News page is simple to use and very effective. In no more time than it takes to send a single email, you can send up to 188 individual personal emails, one to each and every member of the Maryland General Assembly.

Your message does not need to be long or in great detail. Short and to the point is fine. Save the long detailed explanations for your "on paper" letters.

Let's continue to Blitz the Legislature with another 350,000 emails telling them that we won't stand idle, and we should not be blamed for what someone else did.

Remember:
  • The system will automatically fill in the Salutation for you by adding either "Dear Senator Name" or "Dear Delegate Name" above your message
  • Always keep your communications respectful and courteous!
  • Short and to the point emails work best.
Click on the link with the red scrolling banner in the Email Your Legislators system to email the entire Maryland General Assembly.
