10 Things That Make Your Nonprofit "Giving-Worthy"

cash flow
Why would people be willing to give your nonprofit the money to do the work that you do?

That's a question that Gayle Gifford asks in one of the chapters of The Essential Fundraising Handbook for Small Nonprofits.

It's not the fact that you have the best social media program around or that the mayor is on your board of directors. It's about the fact that your work makes a difference in people's lives, and that your organization is trustworthy.

This is good news for smaller, newer, and local nonprofits. You may have a smaller footprint, and your reputation may be known only in your community, but the basics are something that you can do very, very well.

Here are the 10 things Gifford thinks make the difference when it comes to people actually giving you money to do your work:

1.    Doing something that really matters to people (hopefully to lots of people).
2.    Doing it really well
3.    Making a significant impact on a problem or people.
4.    Making a difference in your local community.
5.    Verifying the impact you say you are having.
6.    Using the resources you've received responsibly.
7.    Having amazing people who work there.
8.    Treating people well, including clients, donors, staff, and volunteers.
9.    Walking the talk by living up to your values.
10.    Knowing where you are going and how others can contribute to your success.

Those basics are what have always made for good charitable organizations. They don't really change, although the tools that we use do.
